Closing a Court Branch

  • Last-minute negotiations brokered deals to save at least 85 jobs in the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the Public Guardian’s office ahead of a vote Tuesday to plug a $200 million shortfall created by the repeal of a controversial soda tax.

County board members will vote on a amendment to the budgets for the Sheriff and Guardian’s offices after intense lobbying by Chief Judge Timothy Evans and Sheriff Tom Dart, the sole deviations from a list of targeted cuts handed down last week by board President Toni Preckwinkle. All told, 330 county employees will lose their jobs under terms of the budget, said Commissioner Larry Suffredin, D-Evanston, who has been leading negotiations on the amendment.

The release of Preckwinkle’s budget adjustment on Friday touched off a frenzied 72 hours of back-and-forth that had wound down by Monday evening, said Suffredin, who had become a defacto point man for Dart and Evans as they tried to make their case.
Dart and Evans have been doing as much, if not more, than Kim Foxxx to ensure the jail remains empty and criminals walk free instead of being incarcerated. All this while costs spiral upwards at rates far outstripping any comparable economic indicators.

Also Belmont and Western is to be closed. We're sure that won't have any disparate impact on victims showing up in Court from some of the more economically affluent areas. Of course, that might be part of the plan.

I don't if my progressive blue almost pink liberal brain gets this... but shouldn't CC be saving money given no assholes are locked up... also, the conservative in me tells me the tax money is still being collected as if asshole was locked up-- and the money is going to Tom Sawyer Inc so he can continue painting picket fences, as well as funding political reelection campaigns 😁😁😁😁

Will this stop or hold up the number of assholes getting convicted of crimes? Or is this going to put the brakes on cases dismissed 😑 The clowns running CC think that the general public is even concerned with the required firings to bring the budget some sort of order. The general public themselves are working shit jobs and do not care about lame ass ASA getting laid off. Bring taxes down now

Remember when Dart first got in office he signed Shakman decree to allow a monitor oversee his hiring and firing. It turned out to be a huge scam for the lawyer's led by retired Cook County Judge Meachem. His firm billed the County 1700 per hour, 5.3 million over three years. His lawyer Helen Burke wrote a incredibly flattering report saying Dart office was completely free of political influence. The Shakman monitor left in 2010. From 2010 to present Dart added over 144 exempt political positions to his payroll. One of his six figure political hires was none other than Helen Burke. The lawyer who was suppose to be monitoring the office. Still to this day can't figure out how that hire was ethical or even legal.

Let's see.......the Northside has seen a huge jump in crime. Now you close a court house that was conveniently located for those Northside residence's to go to which will undoubtedly impact their desire to travel outside their "comfort" zone. Victims don't show up, case dismissed and stats go down. BRILLIANT!

But wait, there's more!

With the court closing, could an excuse be made to disband the desk personnel? With no court I'm sure someone, some where will use this to rationalize doing so. Just think, that could increase the police street presence by .0000001%. An INCREASE!

"A $200 million shortfall created by the repeal of a controversial soda tax."

Umm yeah... no. The repeal of the soda tax didn't cause a $200 million shortfall. The fact that the tax was an idiotic idea based on lies about "our childrens" consuming too much sugar and the tax magically making people consume less sugar, which subsequently, and unsurprisingly, caused it to fail to raise the expected revenue, is why there's a $200 million shortfall. You can't bank on tax dollars that haven't been collected from sales that haven't taken place. Predicting that people would pay ridiculous amounts of money for sweetened (and unsweetened) beverages, rather than shopping for them outside crook county, was just as dumb as trying to sell the tax as being about children's health rather than just being about gouging the overtaxed residents of this crooked county for even more tax dollars. It was all about the money, and the money never came. If it was about health, the tax would've stayed. Based on the flawed and misrepresented idea that people would consume less of the sugary beverages if they cost more, the tax actually worked. People weren't buying as many sugary beverages in cook county. You can't have it both ways, Mr. Tony. Higher tax causes lower sales, which causes less tax to be collected. Calculating the expected revenue based on then current sales of sugary beverages doesn't work when your own argument for the tax is that it would result in lower sales. Lower sales = less tax collected. Who are these reporters? Idiots.

Belmont/Western is a boutique court that only exists to sustain the latent racism of northeast siders.

The population presents as liberal, but being white, is still inherently racist.

Pale faces can drive to Harrison for court if they insist on perpetuating the “school to prison” pipeline for young black males.

Crime in Wrigleyville/Boystown blog should be on fire shortly. We’re doing our part to spread the news.

The irony of this is that 'saving' a mere $200 million doesn't matter at this point: we just don't have the ability to sustain a %5 billion budget---that's reality. Either unload many, many more patronage positions or forget about it. These figures are all imaginary. As long as the local government insists on milking and penalizing the captive taxpayer as its sole business model, instead of promoting the private sector to generate sources of genuine economic growth, this is just one continuous trip down the drain. This milk cow will just get skinnier and weaker until it finally drops dead, and they'll be feeding off the corpse, as they are in Detroit.

Run for your lives.

there are still over 22,ooo county employees and by all accounts, many are unnecessary and are doing work ( barely) that is not needed and is not a core function of county government. Besides that they are way overpaid as compared to their private sector counterparts. I wonder if Judge Evans will lay off his two daughters who make over 100 grand to supervise the Civic Center Jury room? It is all smoke and mirrors from the County Government. There should be a call for an independent evaluation of county government, their employees and their function and pay.Remember the two ladies on the payroll ( $90,000) of the County who were " party planners? Or the $85,000 barber?

Not the police, but we have to arm ourselves to protect family and others in our immediate location. I'm a proponent of CCW and the use of deadly force against the vermin you have pointed out. I have been advised and trained on the legal use of force by a retired Homicide Detective. My own thoughts on the use of deadly force, if I am forced to defend myself, I may not stay on the scene. If I can, I'm leaving and my reasoning is simple, look who is in the States Attorney's Office and the Homicide clear-up rate, 13%.

I hate to say I told you so, but I did! I predicted this last week, and there will be other courts closing before the dust settles. Shutting down Belmont and Western, is a further example of how weak the North side Aldermen have become. Preckwinkle, by shutting down Belmont and Western will reduce people of color being locked up, because that is pretty much the only people sent to that court. The White victim living in the $500,000 condo, is NOT going to drive to court at Harrison and Kedzie, for a felony, that has already been reduced to a misdemeanor. A couple of years back a CPD police recruit, W/F was assigned to a shithole like 011, when she reported to her assignment, she drove around the block a few times, and then returned to the Academy to turn in her star! This move is going to Reduce Crime in the 019th District, without having to add more officers! Another Great Crime Fighting Strategy from Dem Democrats, and Fathead Ed. Stay Safe, Baby "G"

This comes under the heading of gross mismanagement. There was considerable consideration that the Bridgeview Court was going to be closed. This closing would have everyone on the south suburbs going to Markham. The problem with this was Markham is falling apart and is very overcrowded. Some of the South Suburban Pols flex their muscles and stopped it. Bridgeview is also falling apart due to the lack of maintenance. It is amazing that with the budget that the county has these buildings just are not being taken care of. toilets don't work, cockroaches running around the Bridgeview, and a shortage of personal. What I find amazing is look at how many building built in the last 30 years are falling apart. It seems that in every level of government the common theme is postpone maintenance for budget sake. After years of postponing maintenance the monies saved is wasted in demolishing the buildings and building new one. A PERFECT EXAMPLE WAS Kennedy- King College. For years there was NO MAINTENANCE done to that building. Every time it rained it was like Niagara Falls. The television studio had plastic covering ALL OF THE EQUIPEMNT. The studio could not be used when it rained. Look at some of the building in the CPD. What does all parts of the government have here? They are run by Democratics.

They are taxing you to death in order to pay for the cook county's version of entitlements. They are trying to de-criminalize black crime. Cook county's government foundation has been and always will be incompetence, John was just a master of hiding things and playing well enough with the other political parasites to stay in power. Prickwrinkle is just an inept racist.

PrickWanker believes she’ll sashay her way back into Board President again with a proposal to return those jobs at the final months of the Campaign.

Crime and recidivism is out of control.
Nobody in their right mind believes letting criminals free is helping.
PrickWanker will find that out.

Public guardians office is fraught with waste anyway and many will be lobbed over to another CC division.
I’m not fooled.
But for closing Belmont & Western...that’s all prime real estate.
They didn’t tear down the Riverview Overpass to ease traffic.
It’s a given the AlderThief is involved and likely the deep pocket developer also included PrickWanker.

This has the same appearance as Chicago and surrounding suburbs red light camera systems, designed to screw motorists out of their hard-earned money through subterfuge and scamming techniques ad nauseum.
