NarCan Coming?

From the comments:
  • Off topic but did you guys just see that we are going to be responsible for administering narcan to overdosing hypes now? Hello union. So now I have to be able to determine if someone is overdosing , what drug they're overdosing on, put hands on said miscreant, administer narcan , and then what , hope to god I don't get mrsa or one of the other airborne pathogens these ilk carry. Or maybe wait for the lawsuit if said hype does die from his long lost family that comes out of the woodwork? Union???
Another reader answered:
  • Hello, off-topic Narcan. You are protected by the so-called "Good Samaratian" law. In most of these cases, friends call 911 and will report person not breathing and will tell you what drug (they THINK) he used. If it's straight heroin, you have a reasonable chance of the Narcan working. If heroin was mixed with fentanyl or U-47700, you are fighting an uphill battle and he may need a Narcan DRIP in the hospital to survive.

In any case, it's not your fault wheather the Narcan works or not. That's all medical and toxicology reports will bear it out.

As for the MRSA, you guys wear blue gloves anyway, right? To be safe, buy yourself a size larger and double-glove like hospital personnel do when making chemo.
Communicable diseases are a real worry. And once you administer to these addicts, what happens when you have to subdue someone you just shot up (nasal spray) with what is essentially an adrenaline cocktail? As for the "double gloves," that's laughable when the Department can't even keep the citywide lockups or Central Detention stocked with gloves for searching prisoners. We're going to have two pair for the boys and girls working on the street to dose addicts? Color us skeptical.

Fuck this job. Body cams and now this? I didn't sign up for this bullshit when I took this job 16 years ago. I will continue to bring in zero revenue for this dump of a city. If the bosses and the powers that be don't like it, then they are more then welcome to offer me a lucrative severance package. They should offer 80% at 20 years of service to get rid of 'dead wood,' such as myself and others that have common sense, can handle themselves in a fight, and don't give a fuck about what the merit bosses think or say.

The conundrum?

Public Health has been gutted in Chicago
by Rahm Emanuel.

"Well... Since the Cops are still around,
why don't we foist it off on them, give them
a bullshit block of "training" so when shit
goes sideways and ends up in civil or criminal
court, we can say "they've been trained" so
we (the city) aren't on the hook for any
damages and we can leave the Coppers to
the media and community lynch mobs."

Seriously...
How much Public Health shit has been
shoved onto The Police over the last
several years?

How many (more) times will Police be dispatched
to a call with a "Take Universal Precautions"
only to see CFD screaming to the scene wearing
protective kit and yelling at the Coppers to
get away from the person in question because
the Fire side of OEMC was given information
that in addition to being an O/D, the affected
subject has a ghastly heebie-jeebie that's
airborne transmissible and contagious?

"Can't tell the Cops because of HIPPA..."

Bull-Muthafuckin'-SHIT!

It's all shits and giggles
when it's just Policemen being
exposed to the ghastly shit
that's out there.

Hope some nasty fucker coughs/sneezes
on Rahm and he takes that shit home
with him and gives it to his household.

Evil little pansy doing everything he
can to get Policemen messed up.

Protect yourselves from THEM.

Police like You Have No Friends.

FOP should negotiate this, if we are to administer meds then we should get the pay bump firemen get for being paramedics. What if I get stuck with the needle after he wakes up and starts fighting me? If they want this, I'll call rahm or one of the cheating Lts, they can handle this. Side note to Ferguson, if you had actually read the emails and come to the inevitable conclusion you would have gotten national attention for being a good and thorough investigator. look, having Narcan with you in a police car isn't always to save a addict on the street. If you have the opportunity to carry some I recommend that you do so. Not so much for the addict, but for the person sitting next to you, or even yourself. Fentanyl is a extremely powerful drug and the amount of it showing up in Chicago is on the rise. You or your partner may be exposed accidentally during a search of a person , vehicle or house. Narcan may save your life until you can get to a hospital. There have been several overdoses recently and the addicts have received several doses of Narcan just to keep them alive. Fentanyl is so dangerous that several agencies are no longer allowed to field test narcotics that have been recovered. Others are being issued gloves and respirators search warrants are executed so not to be exposed. Fentanyl can be absorbed transdermanlly and is 100 times more powerful then Morphine. And if a little kid can get a hold of a pistol in the nightstand, I'm sure a little kid can get accidentally exposed. What if you walk threw a search warrant and step in some and bring your shoes home. There are 1000 ways to get accidentally exposed. Its just a matter of time.

This program is not new elsewhere, and is having some success. However, it falls into the Left's Social Agenda of making the police Social Workers with Guns, that they should never use. The weak point in this program is that officers will have minimum training from a House Mouse hiding at the Academy until he/she can gets a Merit Promotion. The lack of training may be seen as a failure to properly administer aid in a timely manner, and contributing to a delay in treatment by a qualified professional. Also, what will be the protocol? If you are working alone, are you supposed to risk your safety in a hostile environment to let your guard down, and concentrate on this task, while surrounded by hostile residents? Or do you risk delay waiting for a back-up? Now if the "Shitty" wants to make everyone an EMT, that will require some big bucks for training. In addition, before they made it part of fire academy training, firefighters who became EMTs after the academy received a boost in pay, because they now had a definable new skill. Yet, the other reality is this: Are the police supposed to be administering First Aid, or maintaining Order? At what point do you cease to be a care giver and assume the role of taking charge by force if necessary? The Job has become a Dump for all of Society's ills. And after you revive Mookie, can you kindly ask him where he got the shit that put him into OD? Does anyone really think he will be grateful and cooperative? LOL! Baby"G"

Let them do it, isn't it bad enough were doing most of their runs for them anyway...CFD not riding at this time, so its up to us to make a medical assessment. How will the Cops be issued the Narcan? How will it be carried? Will it be another item on their belt? In a box in the trunk? Does Narcan freeze? When you go on duty will take a few minutes to check on the Narcan that's supposed to be in the trunk? How will it be accounted for, who will keep track of it? What's the shelf life? Sounds like a mess to me.

Seems very counter productive to pass up an opportunity to remove some addicts from society.

Sorry, maybe, but maybe not. Good Samaritan laws may not apply to first responders that are acting within the scope of their employment. Also, these laws generally take into account special training and knowledge. So POs may be held to a higher standard, compared to some guy on the street that happens to be holding some narcan. If you can't get away from this, I would get the union to talk to a friendly legislator and get a statute passed providing you an immunity.

To each their own in administering. What I have noticed is that shitbums do not OD in controlled, predictable environments. Oftentimes other shitbums are present and angry or upset. To concentrate on a little performed task, lower myself and my weapon below said shitbums, seems like a really bad idea. The powers that be are blurring the line between agencies. What next, Glocks and arrest powers for medics.

If you want us to also be paramedics/cross trained then pay us. guys and girls other major police departments receive extra pay for these things especially for being CIT trained like New York, their beat cops do not handle mental disturbances they have specially trained cops in a unit to do this and they receive special pay. It's bad enough we have to ride on every fire and ambulance call so when paramedics start handling our jobs then i'll become a paramedic. Too bad but this is how it must be, let the city pay us for our value. Do not volunteer to take the class for it let the city force us to do it as well as the CIT so that we can be compensated for it for performance outside our scope of the job. Our firemen in Chicago are paid an extra stipend for cross training as paramedics, the new hires it is part of their training.

And by the way.......though the Sanctuary State of California refuses to give the CDC the info, seems to be a H U G E epidemic of Hepatitus in San Diego, so bad that hundreds are ill, some have died, and the city has resorted to washing the sidewalks and streets down with material to kill the deadly virus......so be wary here of any contacts you have on the street with anyone because this is transmitted by simple touch......check to make sure each and every cop here has had the Hepatitus vaccine administered......CPD did it years ago en masse......don't know if the newbies have been vaccinated....if not, time for THIS Sanctuary City to do it!!!

From the fire department side I can say that this would be a miracle to implement. The price of narcan went up to approximately $50 for the 2mg preload and there is a shortage of it. Some hospitals only have the vials you need to draw up with a needle not the preloads you need for the intranasal adapter you would use to give it, in fact Mercy hospital was so short at one point they would not resupply ems with narcan if we used it. There was also a recall on some models of the intranasal adaptors, that are about another $8 each. Combine all that with the spending to much money in overtime and lost healthcare money from the repeal of the soda tax, someone would hopefully seriously ask how the city found the money to supply you guys with even one dose per beat car at about $60 a dose. According to the official CPD website that's 279 beats at 8-9 officers a beat so figure you need to buy minimum 2232 kits if that much is even available at $60 a piece, that's $133,290 which when all is said and done will probably be more like a million. If not all areas have the narcan kits and someone ODs and dies in that area without them you know a law suit is coming. Oh and some of these ODs are speed balls so when the narcan knocks out the herion they are so amped up we have to give versed and usually need your help holding them down first so there's that to consider

My department got us Narcan last year without a hitch but none of us can have long guns. Gotta love liberal priorities when it comes to public safety.

First responders up here in New England are reviving the same junkies several times per week on the tax payer dime. With the arrival of stronger opiates like Fetanyl and Carfentanil it now takes multiple hits of Narcan to revive someone. These addicts have no idea what they're injecting, PC policing policies and lenient courts mean the distributors are never held accountable.

New England, Massachusetts especially, is ground zero for the opiate "crisis" and it has utterly destroyed what was once a nice area to live in.

Brother on fire dept says that fire commisioner Hosea say that the fire trucks will not have or be equiped with narcan only the 56 ambulances. Fire commish also stated heroin is a police problem not there rsponsibility, not wasting the fire depts precious resources. Rahmie already agreed. F Santiago.

That's probably their stand, not a medical problem but a criminal problem. I can see how there is a start trying to shift the responsibility from the fire to the police. When can the police start shifting the responsibility back to the stupid citizens for all the ignorant non police calls they make? P.S use the spell check.

To the "not in Kansas anymore Dorothy" commenter. I was just making a serious comment. Not bragging or complaining. Actually not much difference, terrible command staff, not nearly as much murders but not nearly as many officers. But of course you had to make a negative comment.

"I work for Springfield Police Dept. and we have been carrying Narcan for almost a year now. It's ridiculous but luckily I haven't had to use it yet. For some reason CMED is always on scene before me......"

Nope, not going to do it... I’m not an EMT or PARAMEDIC and have never wanted to be. You want me to render aid? I’ll call for an ambulance, there I’m covered!

I agree with you 100%.

Since it's contract time...CFD personnel get extra pay for being hazmat, scuba, emt, etc.. certified whether they are assigned to any of those tasks or not. For some it adds up to an extra 12K per year. Pay us for each certification such as CIT, CPR and even this crap, otherwise it's not my job mon.

The Good Sam laws do not cover police, fire, or medics. The Good Sam laws only cover the public. You can and will be held liable if you mess up. Hell, you can be sued even if you do something right.

Western Mass to be exact. All the jobs left’ economically depressed area and those left turn to dope. Appalachia is just as a bad if not worse.
It’s become an epidemic because it’s white kids and multiple generations that are strung out. Perhaps someone will discover a vast coal reserve in these blighted areas and all their problems will be solved. MAGA
