Amazon

Rahm has all his media pets pushing for Amazon to locate their new "HQ2" here in the Windy City. The Sun Times actually ran an editorial that we laughed at.
  • Chicago is Jeff Bezos’ kind of town, though he may not yet know it.

Our city was founded on a swamp by entrepreneurs every bit as audacious as Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com. It was built by people of every color and background who worked hard, smart and long. It looks back for inspiration, in the same way Bezos looks back to Thomas Edison and Walt Disney, but leans into the future.
Really? Because the "other" narrative is that Chicago is a racist town, built on the back of exploited minorities, who still can't get a fair shake. At least, if you read Mope-rah, Dope-rah and all the assorted grievance-mongers on a daily basis.
  • If Bezos chooses Chicago for Amazon’s second headquarters, known as “HQ2,” the company will need to do no more than live by its own corporate values — and both it and the city will thrive. Amazon represents the next chapter in the kind of quintessentially American disruptive innovation that has been Chicago’s whole story. Amazon, a company taking on the world, would find an ideal home in Chicago, a commercial hub for the world.
Someone is about to say "Chicago values" and we're going to have to slap them in the head.
  • Amazon requires a quick commute to an international airport. Obviously, Chicago’s got that.

Amazon requires close proximity to major highways, and Chicago’s got that.

Amazon requires 8 million square feet of space, [...]

Amazon requires a “highly educated labor pool” and a “strong university system,” and Chicago is powerfully strong on both counts.
Um, yeah. The airport leads the nation in delays most years. The major highways are potholed disasters that exist only to be repaired on a rotating basis. 8 million feet of office space is available because companies are leaving. CPS graduation rates keep rising only because of CompStat type accounting numbers and something like 75% of "graduates" can't read at their grade level. The numbers point to a massive failure of leadership, infrastructure and corruption.
  • Amazon also is looking for a “stable and business-friendly climate.”

Yeah, that one gave us pause.
It should give everyone pause - especially a company looking to make money.
  • Then, of course, there is the crucial question of the quality of life, which frankly is Chicago’s ace card. If it is Amazon’s aim, as the company’s request for proposals says, to set up shop in “a community where our employees will enjoy living,” Chicago is hard to beat. We are a proudly multicultural city of great diversity and tolerance, and rich in culture both high and low, from festivals to theater to professional sports to museums to the symphony to art galleries to bike rides along the city’s stunning lakefront.

Quality of life? We hardly know where to start. We’ll have to write more on that later.
Meaning, "Pay no attention to those pesky 500-to-700 murders every year for the past three or four decades (minus one year). Those wilding teens knocking over little old ladies on the north side? Not an issue! The others riding the Red Line up from the south side to beat up the alternative lifestyle folks in and around Wrigleyville? We call those folks the "Rahmish" after our lovely mayor. And four people slaughtered by rifle fire? It's "cultural!"

Would it be nice to have a big company like Amazon here with the potential tens of thousands of jobs? Sure. But let's not pretend that their corporate and legal teams are looking at exactly these types of issues. Amazon might be better off west of O'Hare where land is cheaper, taxes are lower and Chicago is an exciting place held at arm's length.

Wait -- wasn't it Illinois that led the pack in demanding taxes be paid on Amazon's products, though they had no brick and mortar here?
I'm sure Bezos feels all warm and fuzzy about THAT.
And 'business friendly'?
Illinois is driving businesses away in droves and Chicago's fees, taxes and costs are even MORE prohibitive.
Bad move, Amazon.

The CEO and upper management might like coming to Chicago because they are chauffeured and have security. The average worker who has to ride the CTA or sit in traffic or live among the crime in the neighborhoods won't like it. Plus most everything is cheaper out of the city.

I'm surprised the author of the opinion piece could get through it without doubling over in laughter. It's an article fit for the Onion. Common sense says they would pick a state that is business friendly and a city that people are moving to not out of. One that has a relatively low crime rate and has that trending feel to it. If they don't pick Seattle, I would bet on Austin, Texas. Austin ranks 9th on the 2017 Wallethub list of most educated cities. There is also another pool of prospective employees an hour south in San Antonio. Chicago ranked 33rd on that list.

A “stable and business-friendly climate." What a fucking joke. One of my kids who works at a Jewel just over the Cook/DuPage border mentioned something interesting today. She said that every weekend since the new Cook soda tax took effect the store's parking lot is packed when the store opens with people jumping the border and they literally clean out the stock. She also said most are leaving with a second cart filled with regular groceries. So let's see, if Amazon builds here they will undoubtedly be given huge financial incentives by the nine digit midget while its employees live in the burbs, shop in the burbs, have their kids go to school in the burbs and live relatively safe lives in the burbs. Besides the obvious, could this be another Olympic bid fiasco breaking on the horizon where the taxpayer is stuck with a multimillion dollar bill whether the city is successful in whooing the prize or not?

In terms of a Business Model: Amazon to Rahm, is like "Da Limpycks" were to Shortshanks! The Old Post Office was built almost 80 yrs ago, and has been abandoned for over a decade. The Rehab alone would be astronomical in cost. Add to that the Racial Divisiveness, political corruption, oh and don't forget that includes juries that readily award tens of millions of dollars, because the jurors are unemployed and have no grasp of the value of money; Yeah, sure, Amazon would do well here; NOT. Illinois has one of the most anti-business attitudes in the nation. Absurd taxes, from soda pop to gasoline, with more on the way. Drive anywhere on the Northside and see the empty businesses, driven out of Chicago by oppressive taxes and regulations. Not to mention weather that is absolutely Ugly for about three months of the year, and bumper to bumper traffic, causing residents to spend much of their lives stuck in traffic, or on a train inhaling the body and urine odors of the homeless. Nobody in their right state of mind would locate to Chicago. The analogy to the Chicago of a hundred plus years ago is absurd. A large portion of the Immigrants of today have absolutely No Desire to assimilate, and the immigrants of one hundred years ago did not have to compete with an angry Black population for employment.Cook County had the Largest Number of people leaving last year of ANY state in the U.S.! So what is Rahm going to offer Amazon; a Dead Fish? And as with my opening statement, Shortshanks losing the "Limpycks" was the end of his political credibility. Hopefully, Rahm losing Amazon will be the end of His political career. Watch the circus, avoid being the clowns. Baby "G"

Murders? Meh. That's just a Darwinian thinning of the herd in a couple neighborhoods. Who gives a fuck.

Wrigleyville? If the politicians would take the handcuffs off the police, that could be solved in short order.

But the single biggest problem (and not easily fixed) is the way that Madigan, Daley, and Rahm have turned everything into a financial cesspool.

If we don't get Amazon, those will be the 3 stooges to blame.

(OT) this is great multimillionaires doing this nonsense as the NFL ratings are falling personally I don't even watch football anymore the anti-police anti-American movement they are perpetuating make sure want to turn it off:

If anything, the players seem ready to take their social critique beyond sitting during the national anthem.

Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who is among the ranks of NFL players to sit during the anthem, celebrated a sack Sunday afternoon with a single raised fist.
While the NFL battles declining ratings and a negative perception surrounding the anthem protests, the league office can’t be excited to see players moving their demonstrations to the field of play.

The front office the owner's Who they work for our realizing ratings are falling which translates to advertisers revenue which will rapidly decrease less money for the teams why not eliminate the NFL? Why bother people complain about too many injuries anyway just get rid of it no one really cares.

Is Illinois State police still escorting the bus loads of these anti-law-enforcement anti-military types down the expressways at record speed's with lights and sirens activated? This is not an emergency this is a total abuse of law-enforcement Powers being used by the elected to follow their agendas. If they are paying for the services how much are they being charged? Where does the money go? Why can't every citizen Who can afford the services we allowed these police escorts? Many times personally I am in a hurry why can I call the state police and have a squad car sent to my house lights and sirens to quickly get me to my destination? This needs to be looked into any investigative media here? Crickets!!

"Chicago held at arm's length...?"

Arm's length isn't nearly far enough. Chicago is a cancer that's metastasizing to the rest of the state in the form of crime, white collar lawlessness, and a tax-everything mentality. Chicago breeds bad seeds and then exports them statewide. Meanwhile, state government is held hostage by Chicago legislators. It's all in Illinois' DNA.

Sadly, nowhere in the state is safe for an enterprise of this size. Best for Amazon to set up shop across the border (Madison area?) and not have to deal with Illinois' culture of sleaze.

Who knows what Amazon will do. But I moved from Chicago to Austin for low taxes, far less crime, no winters. (Texas prisons have no air conditioning.)

Austin's airport makes Midway look "Big Time" but at least it's clean.

The only real drawback I see for Austin v. Chicago is that Austin basically has no serviceable public transportation. The buses are so spread out, I can virtually promise I can walk faster, and the train goes from no where anyone is to downtown, but not the part of downtown I ever go to.

On the other hand, is Amazon planning on being the in the Chicago city limits? Or like At&T or Sears, are they going out to suburbland, where there's no decent public transportation either?

I really don't know. I opposed the Chicago Olympics as a sure disaster. Will Amazon be a disaster? I think it's better than the Olympics, as it will likely pay some taxes and last for more than a few weeks.

Oh, and Austin homes have no basements. That sucks.

They don't knee jerk these expansive Building projects overnight.
Couple few years of planning, studies and land wrangling were all done during Rahm's first term.
At this time most of the commissions are being divided up.

Rahm is willing to forgo 10 years of CPD Pension payments to accommodate (lure) those Amazon tax incentives.
With the forcasted Amazing Amazon revenues, like Ohare -The Economic Engine, is sooooooo bountiful, they should be paying our real
estate taxes. Or drastically reducing them.

It's about jobs and Sanctuary and kids.
Expect him to announce the grand scheme sometime after the high holidays about the time mayoral challengers begin to filing their petitions.

Of course there's still the Daley-Vanecko LLC first right to refusal factor to consider.
Ohare is an expensive option and Chicago plots (non eminent domains) of land is tight at the moment.
Those many scattered acres of land that exists around Ohare will take years to glom up by snake insiders (if they haven't already).
Amazon ain't got no time for that, and will likely build south of the city.
They may even toss in a bid to buy Midway Airport, ultimately settling in Bedford Park area.

Rahm losing the Primary in 2019 is a big clue of where Amazon will build.

Dear Bruce in case you didn't know St. Louis is not being considered anymore due to the rioting by the terrorist organizations over there, the best thing you can do Bruce is before the terrorists arrive here in November get the National Guard ready have them stake out the airports the expressways every way to get into the city and as soon as they are here grab them arrest them if they do anything at all without a permit. Just got off the phone with Amazon, told them Rahm will promise them every incentive known to man, but the bottom line; they're employees would be harmed by the move. They would be harmed economically, and their general safety is at risk if they decide to come to Chicago. I told them about the murder rate, bag taxes, soda tax, property taxes and more. Mentioned the exodus of the educated and working people. Told them what is left is the poor unemployed, uneducated, and illegals that are mainly unskilled. I was surprised they took my information........

I would love for Rosement or another Burb to get this. THey have more land, can give their employees parking and of course make Chicago look like fools. Which anything that makes Chicago look like fools I am in support of.

President The Donald thinks Amazon is good business. Good business stays out of Chicago.

Whatever area is pitched-the media always have to paint the neighborhood in terms of 'nicer people moving in' or racism.
Brach's Candy Company - describe the gang infested area. Michael Reese - describe the 'they're moving us out' cries.

Laughing Out Loud flipping through the channels
just in time to catch Fox 32 carrying Rahm al-Ghoul's
water shilling for Amazon to plunk their HQ2 down
in this seething sinkhole of bloody shit-mud
known as Chicago...

Hope they tell Rahm The Non-Stop Grifter
& Panderer to get go get fucked.
