Everywhere a Tax Tax

  • Calling it a “difficult but necessary choice,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on Thursday proposed a “moderate” tax on sweetened soft drinks as part of her $4.4 billion 2017 county operating budget.

Preckwinkle said the one-penny-per-ounce tax is necessary to help avoid devastating layoffs and close a $174.3 million budget shortfall for next year.

“I do want to be clear that I didn’t come to this decision lightly,” Preckwinkle said, addressing her fellow Cook County Board members. “The proposal put before you represents months of effort — working with business and labor leaders, our criminal justice stakeholders, our public health team and my fellow elected officials.”

The tax — which the beverage industry strongly opposes — would go into effect on July 1, 2017. If approved, the cost of a 99-cent can of soda would increase to $1.11; a 20-ounce bottle, from $2.19 to $2.39.
County government is a redundant government - there is almost no function that isn't already covered by a municipal government. Essentially, it's a giant patronage Machine sucking money out of taxpayers for the connected. And Prickwrinkle is dipping into everyone's pocket once again.

Months of efforts with many highly paid, sophisticated (?) and "supposedly" learned people from different walks of life and the BEST you can come up with is put a tax on Soda?????

Sounds more like a meeting of Mental Midgets in Moronville.

Start taxing ALL EBT/SNAP/Food stamp purchases.

Hey, if they got enough money for tattoos, weaves, fingernail art, and 24" Rims,(not to mention guns & ammo) they got enough to put in something into the pot.

I am making a difficult but necessary choice, as well, Toni.
I WILL NOT SHOP in Chicago already, due to certain taxes being levied on my food, drink and simple pleasures.

If you put me in this position, I will do all the shopping I can possibly do OUTSIDE OF Cook County.

And, just for kicks, I am in the process of purchasing a one acre piece of property about half a mile west of Cook County, where I plan to build my new home.

The reason for the tax is, ostensibly, to help people get healthier by making soda pop so expensive that no one wants to purchase it, but the County thinks they're going to reap some big money from the tax.

Huh?

But wait, it gets better. Let's assume that Tony Prickwrinkle is hoping to help those people from the "community" that she thinks overpopulate Dart Land will lose some weight, and get healthier because they won't be able to afford so much soda!

A laudable goal to be certain, but ummm, persons using SNAP benefits aka EBT cards aka LINK cards don't get charged tax on purchases. The Government doesn't want to tax itself...

So essentially, this is a tax on people who have money. You know, the people who don't live in the "community", and who are supposedly underrepresented in Dart Land. Tony's figuring those people will be too stupid to leave the confines of Crook County to purchase in bulk and will pay the tax...

Somehow I don't think this is going to reap them anything but a bunch of unemployed delivery drivers and stores that go out of business because no one buys their stuff... or maybe that's the ultimate goal of the Dumbocrats?

SCC: Don't miss a "Major" lesson in Illinois Machine Politics 101, to come out of the WikiLeaks. A local paper ran with it but it is a real lesson in Illinois Politics. It seems that the Hillary Campaign reached out to Bill Daley to talk to Madigan, the former Governor of Illinois, until Rauner stood up to him. Clinton wanted a date changed on an election. Madigan said NO, because he felt Obama had abandoned Illinois. And in all this barely reported revelations a lot of things are explained. The Old Daley Democrat Machine was inherited by Madigan, not Rahm. At this point in time Rahm is a Political Liability, because of his suppression of the McDonald tape. No matter how much he appeases the Blacks, they will not forget that tape, and if he confronts a Preckwinkle candidate, that tape will be played non-stop in the next Mayoral election. Hillary will not even be seen at the same event with Rahm. Rahm has to meet with his former White House colleagues in Private/Secret, no photo op here. Me Thinks even Sneed won't take his calls, so she keeps stealing Scoops from SCC! The result of all this is an absence of "Push" by the Machine for Hillary! Have you noticed that a Hillary bumper sticker or sign is as rare as a Chicago Police Lieutenant without a Sponsor? Last week while driving through the People's Republic of Evanston I saw more BLM posters than Hillary posters. In my neighborhood on the City's North Side, the only Hillary sign is in front of my hostile Lesbian neighbor's house. (She thinks she is more Butch than I, though I must admit her wife looks Hot!) Apparently Obama has forgotten his Illinois, Hawaii and Indonesia Roots, as has Hillary. These products of the gritty Middle and Working Class Union driven Machines, go international; and forget that they ultimately shit, piss and die like the rest of us. And that old Illinois political lesson, that I believe came from King Richard I, of Bridgeport takes hold: "All Politics is Local". You dance with the person that brought you to the dance, or you leave the dance alone. STAY FETAL, STAY FETAL, F%CK RAHM! BABY"G", Sgt. Emeritus in Chicago Political Science

The stakeholders in the county cannot afford your brand of management and criminal justice. We want criminals locked up in closed jail divisions and not on the streets with us. We want you to manage and if you have to screw anyone, screw your cronies and not the citizens.

If Preckwinkle was serious about reducing taxes, and she is not, this girl would reduce the size of county government and reduce payroll costs. Most county workers make 30% more in pay and benefits then their private sector counterparts and many do not work within their job description. Payroll accounts for most of the budget. Studies have been done on this very topic but the county will not release them. Recall the two women who were on the payroll of one of the county commissioners for over 90 grand a year as administrators? All they did were personal errands for the commissioner and planned parties . There is plenty of that going on

Why do we still need a taxpayer funded hospital system with Obamacare? The taxpayer is paying higher federal taxes so people without insurance have coverage but Cook county says they need more tax dollars for the uninsured and Stroger Hospital. Is it that Obamacare does not work?
Another bleed of Cook County tax dollars is the court costs for non criminal cases where the case is tried in Cook County but occurred in another county, for example a dram shop case from Fox Lake (Lake County) that was filed and tried in Cook County.
There are manny many cases like them.

The 6 a.m. morning news on Channel 2 had a story on accidental shooting in homes across the nation. The propaganda piece suggested that legal gun ownership and guns contained in homes somehow equated to a rise in gun violence. Not the action of criminals I might add.

Channel 2 then cites the shooting of a six year old in Englewood who was shot on her front porch. The archived footage shows a porch, pans away to casings on the street with yellow markers and then narrates that over 40 shots were fired. “Accidental” discharge in the home and “legal” ownership of firearms is a far stretch to make your case against “legal” ownership and firearms in the homes as a means of self defense. This was obviously a gangland shooting. Nice try but the informed masses see right through your b.s.

Two years later William "hog nut's" Beavers at a county board meeting said that the tax revenue on cigarette's was way down and revenue had to be raised elsewhere. Naturally nobody in the media called him or any other members of the Crook County board and their blatant lie.

Beavers also admitted to buying his gas and cigarettes in nearby Indiana too!

Well whatta ya know. Who would've guessed that Tony *Periwinkle* ;-) is a Beatles fan. I would have thought Otis Redding, Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters would be more to her liking.

Then again, she IS the 'Taxman'

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman! Cos' I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me. Taxman!

"Start taxing ALL EBT/SNAP/Food stamp purchases."

10/14/2016 12:50:00 AM

There is only one program, not three. "Food stamps" have not physically existed for ages now.

"Hey, if they got enough money for tattoos, weaves, fingernail art, and 24" Rims,(not to mention guns & ammo) they got enough to put in something into the pot."

Uh, why not tax "tattoos, weaves, fingernail art, and 24" Rims?" These are all unnecessary luxury items.

That way, you're not hurting sick elderly people struggling along on $130/month for food, who didn't drink soda in the first place, and who don't even have a car, let alone "rims."

The truly poor in this country are largely alone, silent, and invisible. Hard enough to get through the day re-using teabags and keeping only one small light on at a time -- and still sliding backwards. There is nothing left to cut back on at home -- and Com Ed is now going to start "peak use billing" for that one light, too.

Poverty is not being "cured," it's being enforced. More than $2,000 in the bank, and people can lose all their food, medical, and other benefits. Not enough to live on, not enough to die on. Individuals fall through the "safety net." You want a crowd to grab all those donated Butterball turkeys down at the Glass Block Cross Church, all those "free school supplies" to throw at each other on the bus.

The show everyone hates is done with sheer strength of numbers. You need 17 vaguely-related people jammed together, lots of chiluns, the men slingin and the women working a little min-wage here, the odd government job there, and then you've got something. Then you see the cars parked on the front lawn and in the back yard, the stolen 66" bigscreens going night and day with the thermostat set at 90 deg. They hit a lick here and you catch them up in Superior, Wisconsin in their cuz' nice three-bedroom Section 8 set up the same way -- always a place to go.

Thus, "The Great Society," fifty years on...

We pay a tax on water , now soda, Rahm wants a tax on utilities, we pay tax on cell phones , cable, we pay for garbage pick up, tax on gas, cigarettes and I know I'm missing many more. When does this madness end? When do we tell these politicians no more , quit wasting OUR
money! Vote them out!
