Mourning Bands

The Inspection Division came out with an Administrative Fax Message the other day about how Mourning Bands were not authorized to be worn since June or so, and all supervisors should be enforcing the proper wearing of the uniform.

This, the day after Sheriff’s police Officer Jason Gallero died during a training run, something considered "in the performance of duties" for years.

During this horrible year for law enforcement, is it too much to ask we acknowledge the sacrifices of other agencies, especially one we work in close contact with on a daily basis?

No mourning bands, or other symbols of caring and grieving. This is similar to, but worse than the Dallas Cowboys not be allowed to honor the Dallas PD and their fallen officers.

That said, Will Special Ed allow you to take a knee during his next pep talk?

I'm convinced that anyone higher than the rank of LT does not consider themselves a policeman. They consider themselves politicians with guns. It's all about their next promotion. Fuck anyone who wears a blue shirt is pretty much the sentiment of the brass. If you spar me for my mourning band I will gladly tell you to go fuck yourself. Put me on a fixed foot post, traffic car...whatever you want to do to punish me. All we have is each other and if you don't see that I will be more than happy to point you in the direction of the nearest pile of shit you can shovel into your fat fucking gullet.

That would require the Sgt to actually say a few words in passing--as well as the Lt keeping on the Sgt/troops to dress correctly and stop committing minor infractions (congregating, fail to come clear or relocate....)

But the Sgt and Lts don't do it. They haven't for a long time, not since the Captains left. The few that do are demonized. This Department looks like a bunch of sloppy, lazy do-nothings. We aren't policing any more. We may as well at least look good.

Maybe you don't think it matters. Maybe you are one of the lazy, sloppy ones. Your appearance matters whether you believe it or not. Have some self respect.

While working first watch just about fifteen hours after the attacks on 11 SEP 2001, I was wearing the mourning band on my button. The district commander asked me why I was wearing it. I told him it was in honor of all the coppers and FF's killed that day. He said he understood but ordered me to remove the band as there was no administrative message authorizing the band yet.

The wearing of mourning bands is supposed to symbolize the mourning of a police officer killed in the line of duty. Wearing them for other reasons diminishes the respect shown to those who make the ultimate sacrifice. You can mourn an officer who dies accidentally or due to illness but it's not, never was and hopefully never will be the same as a line of duty death. There are those who wear mourning bands at all times and this is absolutely wrong. It's an insult to those who have died in the line of duty and it's an insult to those who will die in the future. If you are already wearing the band, what do you do to show your respect to the next officer killed in the line of duty? The simple fact is that most officers who wear the bands are doing it to cover their star number from the public. When worn correctly, the band never covers the star number because it's supposed to be worn diagonally not straight across the star number. I find it amusing when I see the really cowardly officers wear the mourning band to cover their star number and a stack of paper or maybe a phone in their pocket to cover their name. If you are that much of a coward, get another job!!

This is all because BLM sees it as an in your face support the police against their freedom of hate speech. They believe that to honor the fallen police officer you minimize their hate the police msg / group. It has become to them a politically adverse msg to them. They believe it represent Blue Lives Matter not Black. Therefore a call was placed by a few activists to Eddie and Weezy. They made them now They will break you.. Maybe we should all keep wearing them and get a layoff W/O pay around the next holiday. Or if Eddie had any balls he would authorize a pin of some sort to show we still support each other.

The sgts that say something become bitches and jagoffs. Which I can handle. That goes with the territory. But why should I be the only jagoff on the watch? The sgts don't stick together so you hear, well sgt so and so let's me. Sgt so and so doesn't tell me to take my earring out. Sgt so and so let's me wear my hair to my ass. Or my dreads are part of my religion. Or "I can wear a hoodie underneath my blue shirt cause its cold outside and sgt so and so doesn't care so why do you? Don't you know its cold out there!" Then they run into the lt's office and cry they are being picked on and the lt tells the sgt that it's not a big deal to let it go because they are a good worker. Or the sgt writes up the officer for the same infraction over and over and the lt rips it up. So no, I'm done telling whiney little children to blow their nose. I'm not getting back up from my fellow sgts and from my bosses. Officers cry to their alderman that they are being picked on then the big boss gets the call. It needs to be from the top down, not the bottom up.

1). Ed the Stripper should be written up for being an overweight oaf in uniform. His silence on the Lie-tenants exam is deafening.

2) i remember being written up by an Inspector Stampnick for having a uniform black leather case containing 2 speed loaders since they were not authorized - only the flat six round ammo pouch (slow and the rounds would fall out on the ground if your hands were sweaty)
My Captain was so pissed off that he started calling down to R & D prodding them to approve speed loaders. He also gave my several early ducks to compensate for the 1 day off that i took. Bosses like that are a thing of the past. But Inspectors are still trolls coveting scrambled eggs to go with their gold badge. Maybe Wheezy should be given the job.

Mmm Hmm. Now son, know the order before you shoot your mouth off:

"Elastic strap to be worn around the member's star/badge horizontally above the number during designated times of mourning"...so says U06-02-40.

Now, maybe if the department modified its policy so the band should be worn diagonally, like you mention (and I happen to agree), it wouldn't block the star number. But, due to the shape of the star, it will naturally sag over the numbers when worn according to the order. So, typical Department: Gig you if you wear it right, gig you if you wear it wrong. Inspectors gotta get dat mover!
