New Oversight!

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel's top aides on Thursday gave a group of aldermen a broad outline of his plans for revamping the city's much criticized police oversight system, but City Council members who attended said they were withholding judgment until they see a concrete proposal.

Aldermen were told that a new agency to investigate police misconduct would be set up with more powers than the current one. It would be guaranteed minimum annual funding to prevent the mayor and aldermen from reducing its power through budget cuts. And a new Police Department inspector general would report to the city IG.

But it remained unclear how the new investigative agency chief would be selected and what role the mayor and aldermen might play in making that pick. That's because the administration has yet to start drawing up plans to create a new civilian oversight board. Such a board might recommend a chief or pick one itself, aldermen said.
So, pretty much.....nothing. No details, no direction, lots of aldercreatures questioning what the end game is here. We trust the FOP is ensuring that this soon-to-be-appointed board dots the "i's" and crosses the "t's" in regard to all protections being due to American citizens - things like the Due Process that was blatantly ignored recently. After all, there are more than a few elections coming up shortly.

New over site committee's way of dealing with things---- if copper gets into a jam, copper is fast tracked for firing, then fast tracked to get booted from the high city life to the burbs--- cause at the end of the day, they won't be able to afford their mortgage or city property taxes

Yea well if your looking for due process that won't happen with an IG..... Everyone should know that IG reports and anything associated with them are EXEMPT from FOIA laws, you will have to sue to get any documents from them. So much for transparency

The mayor just says what he thinks the dumb democrats want to hear. He will sell out anyone just for a vote. He can't keep anything or anyone safe in this city, not even the people who actually make it work everyday. Residency rule should be removed immediately and let officers move out of this anti-police hating city to protect their families. Hate crime is bad unless you are a democrat. Do as I say, not as I do. I can hate but you cannot.

" More then a few elections"?, I am not sure that the alderman or the mayor really care what the police officers think, and I am pretty sure that much of the public is not on the side of the police at this point. The media has been waging a war against the police as have the activists. They misrepresent the facts and get away with it. Who will step forward and defend the police ? I really don't know at this point. I sure hope someone does.

Nothing concrete came from it, but I'm sure there was a lot of money changing hands from the city to various "advisors" and "consultants." Smoke and mirrors to throw money around and pretend that a legitimate agency will be set up to investigate the police. In reality, Rahm will pick who he wants to do what he wants, give them whatever powers he decides they should have, but they will ultimately answer to him before making any decisions. I'm sure this new oversight group will be unnecessarily large and swallow up large amounts of money that the city supposedly doesn't have. They'll probably even name a new Deputy Chief as Liaison to this new oversight group, a new Chief, and a new Commander. Maybe one of these highly qualified NOBLE lieutenants that were recently promoted due to their totally legitimate high test scores will be picked as the head honcho of whatever new department bureau this creates.

Maybe this new "board" can pick a new mayor and will they have oversight or outta sight for promotion's too. This is another way to attack due process rights of the contract. Minimize your contaacts with the public, you'll still get paid, no Cop involved in mc donald or o neal would have been given anything more than an honorable mention if their had been a simple arrest. If they don't comply don't jepordize your future.

Civilian here.

You know, the City is spending an inordinate amount of time working on "fixing" the police. What a bunch of dummies or worse. The police are not the problem, the bad guys - white, black, yellow, red, and brown - are the problem. But wait, RAHM DOESN'T WANT TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. He loves the chaos with its attendant distractions. If he wanted to solve this problem, he would hire Milwaukee County Chief David Clarke as the CPD superintendent. Instant respect. Instant morale boost. The beginning of the end of the BS that is going on on the streets of this City.

Hey Donald Trump, want more votes? Then promise to - as the first thing you will do - hire Chief Clarke as your chief domestic advisor!

All 3 engaged in a heated argument at the desk, in front of whoever happened to be around? Sounds more like dumb, dumber, and dumbest to me. Did someone's poor little feelings get hurt? Police supervisors acting like children in front of the people they're supposed to be seeing an example for and providing leadership to. Nice job Sgts. How the fuck have you been the police long enough to be Sgts without being able to take a little ball-busting? How hard is it to just ignore some stupid shit that someone says? How hard is it to throw a joke back at them without getting into a heated argument? Grow up and get a fucking clue.

As often happens here when recounting an event, about 1% of the above happened as stated. The 3rd watch DSS attempted to publicly call out two 2nd watch sergeants at the desk infront of civilians and officers over an event they were unaware of. The 3rd watch DSS overreacted relative to a minor situation instead of talking to the sergeants about it. One of the 2nd watch sergeants attempted to talk to her PRIVATELY about the matter which degraded swiftly. The 3rd watch DSS never called the 2nd watch sergeants "dumb and dumber" to their face. So, to the original poster and the 3rd watch DSS, get your facts straight before you shoot your mouth off...you'll look less stupid in the long run.

It would be guaranteed minimum annual funding to prevent the mayor and aldermen from reducing its power through budget cuts. And a new Police Department inspector general would report to the city IG.

But the City IG in fact DOES have his budget controlled by the aldermen. So nice sleight of hand here.

That kind of so-called ball-busting should not be done at the front desk where anyone can hear it. It makes us look like immature frat boys and if that's the image you want to portray to the general public and the ppo's, go for it. But a bit of professionalism goes a long way, so have some self-respect and stop acting like 12-year-olds.

That is brilliant! There are ways for supervisors to get you to work. The methods are legal and encouraged by the General Orders. Be careful what you wish for that bus will come back around 10 times harder.

Do you think that the city is going to cave in? They will just raise the taxes and fees. Are you ready for a city income tax?

We will see if Rahm and the sensible alderman cave in to the demands of the progressives who want the superintendent appointed by the community and an elected police board. In other words, citizens in total control of the department with all of their petty jealousies, agendas and dogmas and who know nothing about being the police.
