Museum Gone

  • During his decades in politics, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has shown strength in a number of roles.
    Backroom deal cutter? Check.

    Prolific campaign fundraiser? Definitely.

Bulldozing mayor who gets his way? Most of the time.

Salesman and consensus builder? Not so much.

But Emanuel had little choice but to take on that last role in his bid to land billionaire "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' $734 million museum for Chicago.

It wasn't a great fit, as Lucas left it to Emanuel to persuade Chicagoans — and park activists — to back a museum with a bizarre design and a mysterious art collection on a prime piece of protected lakefront property. The two-year sales pitch came to an end Friday when Lucas pulled the plug on the project and turned his attention back to his native California.
An arrogant billionaire is just the type of ass that Rahm would like to kiss, and kiss it he did, loudly and publicly. Which makes this museum fail so much more damaging to the Rahm brand.

If you are so inclined, here's a link to Friends of the Parks. Consider throwing them a donation for their good work.

First Chicago lost the Olympics, and now it has lost the Lucas Museum. How will the City stand two such loses in a row? This cannot be good for the Big Shouldered City's reputation. No wonder the citizens are restless.

Good job Friends of the City...oops, Friends of the Park. You almost lost your win when your Board wrangled with each other due to members being pressured from sources close to the Mayor. Vanity George took his toys and went home. It was his ego that he was placating not the children nor the good of the city where his dear wife, Melody has lived and loved all of her life, according to her. If he was a true benefactor, he would have ridden out the negative, taken heed and become a Preservationist for the Lake and agreed to a site with less adulation. Old Georgie revealed his true self...so did Melody and so did Rahm. Its a new day!! Hooray.

Lucas' venture (not a museum, but a for-profit tax dodge) scared the hell out of me, but there was nothing one lonely voice could accomplish against such big money. I'm glad Friends of the Parks took on the big fight to protect the lakefront for future generations and saved us the many millions of dollars the city would have underwritten in loans and concessions.
I went on their website today and joined, mostly because of the vicious hatred being posted on their facebook page once the story broke. One goof was threatening to get the Friends of the Parks board members names and addresses and get them to the gangs of the city so at least the random killings in the city could make sense and do some good (in other words, thugs please go out and kill the board members).
I don't always agree with Friends, but this time I did. They're going to be under siege for awhile from the crazies, so if you support what they did, please consider going on their website and just donate a few dollars or join. That lawsuit cost them a lot and saved our lakefront legacy.

The false dilemmas of "this or a parking lot," "this or little children of color will suffer," were but a smokescreen. George and Mellody's refusal to move the museum across LSD belied their claims of caring about the people of Chicago. They cared about a monument to themselves.

This is the Ultimate Bitch Slap! Apparently even Ari couldn't bail out 9.5 on this one. So, like Da Humiliation his predecessor Mumbles Daley endured with the loss of "Da Lympics", another Chicago Mayor suffers another humiliating loss. But this loss is a victory for all of us, who love the lakefront, and are tired of unnecessary taxes. Long term, this would have cost the citizens of Chicago billions of dollars. Consider the long term maintenance of the museum, and the fact that very few connected contractors, vendors and clout heavy employees would have benefited, while taxes were set to be raised to pay for this. The only loss here, is to the inflated ego of a carpetbagger, who will not be Mayor after the next election. And he deserves to lose for not being man enough to simply resign. Every country would report not glowing reviews of this city - but the opposite. Adios to the Museum - 8 years from now, it will only be looked at as a 'thanks, but no thanks.' Two years of negotiations means two years of scheming. The money was allocated and is being secreted somewhere, and some connected investor is collecting some mi-tee-fine dividends on those funds.
What happens now, another grandiose ghetto park, frivolous parade, statues or super wide bike lanes, skateboard emporium?
Rahm is spending big money on airport hotels now, it never ends.
There's dozens of high ticket items Rahm has plans for the next two years.
Couple a few of Rahm's community project budgets together along with his police advisory task force and the Dept of have hired 1,000 new officers.
The city is dying sociologically and Rahm is padding everyone of his obligations (donors) before he's history.
The next mayor will continue, collect those high taxes from us and spend-spend-spend.
We will one day be the town of Hill Valley with a real Goldie Wilson.
Back to the Future, now that's a legacy Rahm can place his mark on.

Blair Kamin in the Trib wrote an interesting piece. He puts the majority of the blame on Lucas and Hobson themselves. Lucas never once came th Chicago to pitch the museum to the public. It was as if he wanted it, so he was entitled to build wherever he wanted. He pitched Rahm, Rauner, Pfleger, Duncan to do the dirty work for him. You can bet each of them has some sort of self interest in the project.
Lucas consistently refused to sit down with the press and talk about his ideas for the building. No one was ever told specifically what was going to into the museum. Another pass it and then we'll tell you. Just like the parking meter deal. As we all know, that worked out well for us. Daley is still making big money off the deal.
And then to top it off, Hobson makes it racial. Typical things aren't going your way, make it about race. Poor black and brown children will never get to see a monument to George Lucas. Ask the most brown and black children in Chicago who Lucas is and they won't have a clue.
Arrogance of these people is unbelievable.

Too bad Tiny Dancer isn't actually from Chicago. If he was he might have a clue why 'Friends of the Parks' sued to keep that land open, and why his scheme SHOULD have failed as it eventually did. Even though that today that land is only a paved over parking lot.

The reason is simple: Daniel Burnham's, 'Plan of Chicago'. Rahm would know that if he grew up and lived in Chicago. Of course that would entail him giving a rat's ass about Chicago and its History, and why we have an open lakefront with parks & greenery like we do today.

Granted, Burnham's 'Plan' isn't fully realized, maybe it never will be? But if that monstrosity of a 'museum' was built and the land turned over to Lucas, that land never would be a Park.

By the way, why does Chicago even need a 'Friends of the Parks' organization in the first place? In a functioning, corruption free city government where everything isn't for sale to the right insider, a 'private' organization to protect parks would never even be thought of. Then again, this is Chicago.

I guess I answered my own question.

The real reason Mr. Phlegler is upset about the Lucas museum not coming here is because he lost out on the big dollar donations/bribes that he could extract from them by way of white guilt complaints.

He whines how are the Friends of the Parks any different from the gangs?

Here's a few ways
1: Friends of the Park work.
2: FOTP pay taxes
3: FOTP don't sell poison (like crack and heroin) to their people
4: FOTP settle disputes with negotiations. Usually thru lawyers.
5: FOTP don't do drive-by shootings
6: Anyone can walk through a FOTP neighborhood.
7: Most of them are NOT on parole.
8: Most don't have IR#s
9: Can read, write and speak the English language.
10: You can understand them when they speak
12: When they talk to the police, they Say "officer". Not M*****F*****.
13: Don't fight the police.
14: Don't shoot at the police
15: Don't shoot innocent bystanders
16: The parents marry. Commit to each other.
17: Actually raise and mentor their children
18: Cooperate with their children's schools

This was just a quick off-the-top-of-the-head list. I am sure that there are more.

It was / is a collection of his art that he has collected over the years. So I guess since we already have an ART MUSEUM which houses historical pieces, famous works then I believe we could get away with not having this guys museum.

I mean maybe the Jaws movie creator would like to build a gigantic aquarium and put fish in it for all the poor and underprivileged children of the city on the lake front. Maybe next to that old beat up Shedd aquarium.

Here's what I'd like to do. I heard some Alderman has been buying tents for the homeless and they have been setting up camp under highway overpasses. I have seen this and it looks dreadful.

Why not relocate them to where the Lucas Museum would have been. They could pitch their tents right next to the jogging and bicycle paths. Then they could drag themselves out of the sack and beg from the passersby. Better than having them in traffic.

Lucas would have written off ALL those old movie props and his donations against the tax burden of all the wine country properties he owns in Napa Valley. Now he has to pay taxes until he can sell this tax dodge to another city. Star Wars was a movie. 40 years ago. Let it go. The movie was shit. We don't have to glorify this asshole by building a monument to an old, lonely man's ego with a 100 year lease with two options to renew at $10 a year.

I would bet you like that monstrosity as well.

All of the above comments are good. Well received by myself, and I hope others. My comment is this. For anyone who may still be in doubt about the Lucas Museum Project, take a walk around Northern Island. What A Total "Mess" the City has made, with that well meaning project. I bike there often. If they did nothing but; Left It Alone, it would have been, just fine.
Thank You "Friends of The Parks" ! Keep Up The Good Fight. Montgomery Ward, would be proud of you.

Should have built that museum in Englewood.

Bulldoze a parking lot, 71st to 75th St and from and Halsted to Racine.

Urban renewal at its best.

I was ok with it untl it became about "black and brown children"

Screw them. Anytime blacks and browns are used as a reason for anything it tells me the reason is full of crap.

We should do things for CHILDREN, not "blacks and brown children"

Fuck you lucas and fuck you rahm.

You do realize this museum would have nothing to do with Star Wars, Disney does not pay a billion dollars for nothing. Lucas has a minimal art collection and that's about it, what the hell is a narrative museum any way? You might have been suckered into going once but after the word got out who the hell is gong to that museum?

Star Wars was racist, anyway. Only 2 black characters in Lucas's Star Wars, the main villain, and a guy who hocks Colt 45.

As many others have said about the Lucas museum and Star Wars exhibits not being relevant. They are just make believe movie props.

Want to see REAL space hardware? Go to Washington DC to the Smithsonian and see the actual Apollo command module that took men to moon.

We lost a revenue generating machine... for WHAT!?!?

We lost a thousand or more construction jobs... for WHAT?!?

We lost hundreds of permanent jobs in tourism and education... for WHAT!?!?

We lost a prestigious Film School that my grandchildren were hoping to go in the not so distant future.
We lost it... for WHAT!?!?

Here's what I'd like to do. I heard some Alderman has been buying tents for the homeless and they have been setting up camp under highway overpasses. I have seen this and it looks dreadful.

Why not relocate them to where the Lucas Museum would have been. They could pitch their tents right next to the jogging and bicycle paths. Then they could drag themselves out of the sack and beg from the passersby. Better than having them in traffic.

Oh, if some "Friend of the Park" complains, ask if they are willing to sign a complaint.

You can still send your grandkids to film school in Califormula. That's if they pass the entrance exam.

Typical from the ignorant and uneducated. Tourism and conventions are the only industries drawing people to Chicago. Why minimize the customer base? I guess you came up with a great idea to get people to spend money in Chicago? Well, let's hear it...I'm sure you figured out how to reduce homicides too while driving around in your beat(off) car.

to the "Consider throwing them a donation for their good work"...KMA post on 6/26/2016 0900 am post You must be some jag-off from city hall or just a dumb-fuck copper. That blob of white shit museum would be a money LOSER not a money maker. Just because jack-off lucas makes star war movies do you think people are going to pay to see those stupid props and other assorted bullshit that most people don't give a fuck about? If borrowing 1.2 billion to fund this bullshit museum at taxpayer expense is your idea of making money then you must be soft as shit. We can't get jack-off rahm to funnel 500 million into our pension but you want him to borrow this to fund a bullshit museum on the lakefront. Go fuck yourself.

Lucas refused to show the media his " art collection" and whatever else he planned on putting in his " museum ". If he was truly concerned about the children of Chicago, more then the black and brown ones, he would have taken an alternative location. But, no. He wanted this to be his personal showcase and his legacy. It did not belong on the Lakefront. Now, Rahm, turn that parking lot into a park and tear down the old McCormick place.

Word of advice to Summer Mobile.. If by chance you do get to work the Lake front don't drive on the grass or Friends of the Park will make a phone call and you will be back on midnights by your next shift!

If you are trying to get dumped then that would be a good place to start.

26 June

Rahm and Rainier take to the media for torpeding the Luca$ museum. They vilify Freinds of the Park for their successful opposition.

How fn crass and classless can you be? You and FOTP had a difference of opinion. They prevailed. Live with it. Contrary to what the elite says most of the public had no interest or desire for it.

Rahm just showed what classless petulant vindictive schmuck.

But I think we already knew that.

troll: Twillie said a mouthful. We actually have to have public interest groups protecting the public interest because the government purportedly representing the public interest DOES NOT. That is when it became clear this state, this county and this city have passed the point of no return. The government represents itself and its own interest and this is what precisely the Lucas deal was all about. It was one fat cat making a big splash for himself and all of the minions getting rich off it. There was no concern for the black and brown children. What a load of bullshit that whole deal was. Rahm, when you run again you will be so fucked you are done with public office everywhere. Asshole.

Lucas tried to get his museum built on National Park Lang in California only to be turned down. Next he comes ro Chicago and acts like it was his 1st choice because his old lady is from here. Thinking it will be a done deal wi h a quick donation to Rahm. Assumed Rahm could do what he wanted, didn't foresee any problems from friends of the park or an independent judge. For all you Star Wars geeks, the museum was a testament to George Lucas. There would have been some movie memorabilia but it was primarily to show off his art collection, besides that building design was worse then the UFO at Soldier Field

OT:

Per a SunTimes article:

Now we see why Flegler was so upset about the loss of the Lucas Museum. In 2014 Flegler and St. Sabina received $200,000 from the George Lucas Foundation. Right about the time the idea of the museum was first floated.

Fr. Mike: Bought and paid for like a (not-so cheap) whore.
