Heroin OD Spike

Anyone else notice an uptick in heroin overdoses?
  • SCC,

CFD paramedic on the west side. Don't know if you heard, but we have ambulances doing 30 and 40 runs a shift the past few days, all related to another f&%^ed up batch of heroin. So far we're saving maybe 75% of junkies, but the number of deaths is at least as high as a few years back when the media was all over it. Why not now?
Maybe the media has learned that no one really cares about dead junkies.

So...anyone notice?

It would be interesting to see how many people in the suburbs are impacted by this as well.

Heroin is not just "in the ghetto". A lot of suburban kids/people are on it as well.

Just another "hospitalization tax" on those paying into Blue Cross.

Add the junkies (and THEIR hospital costs) to the shootings list.

But one day even junkies were the excitement, hopes and dreams of someone until that intersection with fate. Do not lose your humanity first poster. This is why the people this blog is dedicated to are the police and do what they do. (same for the firemen and EMTS too) I know this is true from the many I know. If a person is charged with drug-induced homicide (720 ILCS 5/9-3.3), would the UCR code of the offense change to 0110??

Will the department (meaning those with gold stars, or the mayor even) allow those cases of persons who die from drug overdose be classified as murder?? Will the department allow our already depleted resources be used to investigate these overdoses as homicides?

Highly unlikely with the high number of homicides alread. Can you imagine our homicide rate going up with these overdose numbers added? just think, for almost every overdose death, someone did deliver the substance that resulted in death, and therefore should be investigated as a drug induced murder.

Sad to say for the families of the deceased that the case will be classified as non-criminal and the deaths will go on.

Tomas Milian's General Salazar from the 2001 film, TRAFFIC, had the finest response when asked by the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy what he planned to do regarding treatment of junkies. The response: "Treatment? Addicts treat themselves. They overdose, and it's one less to worry about." Simple, pragmatic solution.

It's a shame taxpayer money is being pissed away on this Naloxone tomfoolery.

Don't have a number, but it's probably more heroin.

There are undoubtedly a lot more "hidden," slower deaths from liver failure caused by the acetaminophen added to milder pain meds like Norco. They recently reduced the APAP from 500-600 mg/tablet to 325 mg, but still -- a couple are OK for an injury, but abusers chew up a dozen and wash it all down with a 40, and you have a problem.

Over 75 drug-smuggling tunnels under our southern border so far, and guys building drug-smuggling submarines up in the backwaters of the Amazon -- what to do, what to do? Mess with old people at the drugstore.

During the 1st fetanyl episode a few years back, I had occasion to talk to one of the long time neighborhood junkies in 015. Told me that when they hear about heroin nearly killing people, junkies actually seek out that particular batch of heroin.
He said no junkie ever believes they'll overdose. Said "That shit only happens to muffukas who don't know what da fuk they doin".
With that mindset, junkies believe the shit that nearly kills you, must be a helluva high. So, winners that they are, they seek out the killer shit. Which explains why the spikes in od's are mostly contained to one relatively small geographical area. Usually, the wesside... 011 or 015.

If you want to bring a nation down, flood it with narcotics. Destroy generations and bring the civilized nation to its knees. Encourage gateway drugs such as marijuana and then encourage “casual” use of the hard stuff like heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and their derivatives. Get them good and hooked. Then offer publically available sources of cash without accountability to purchase illegal narcotics ensuring foreign drug cartels prosper.

Further encourage casual use by public policy justifying continued narcotic abuse by declaring it a disease and through de-criminalization in the courts. And when the addicts die in droves, blame budget cuts and lack of public funding diverting attention from personal bad decisions resulting in personal destruction. Tug at the heart strings of the public by introducing addicts who were unable to seek funded treatment because of slashed public budgets and ineffective funding initiatives.

5/17/2016 12:57:00 PM

Widespread drug addiction is just another mechanism to destroy western culture as we know it. Be sure to use grieving families as advocates used as a tool to capture public sympathy for more public funding elevating those compassionate elected officials. And if anyone objects to wasting more public money, characterize them as mean spirited, unsympathetic, uncompassionate villains who are attempting to block the good intentions saving lives rehabbing those who suffer from drug afflictions.

Casual heroin use was an experiment at the Needle Park in Switzerland in the 80's. A whole generation was lost. Seattle Washington has over 20,000 homeless, unemployable addicts who panhandle and commit property crimes on a daily basis to fund the high. Seattle decriminalized drug use and their successes have destroyed American children and American families. Compassion in Action. Chicagoland is next and is a work in progress.

Its shame but where are the families. So many aspiring artists, musicians and actors couldn’t handle the fame from their nine to five turning to narcotics to ease their pain of being famous. It is perfectly accepted norm in entertainment. So called role models for our children.

The courts intervene saying its small amounts but in reality they are the enablers of a guaranteed downward spiral of addiction. And think of the murder problem. How many shootings are a result of a drug turf war over those fat stacks of Benjamins? Shame on you judges cloaked in black robes turning a blind eye not jailing addicts and dealers. Rather judges line up in compliance with the political party in charge established protocol for turning a blind eye to the consequences of drug use. The violence and overdoses are accepted everyday life in parts of the city while police are the identified problem.

It is by design to ensure destruction and despair in certain communities which receives an inordinate amount of government compassion in the form of entitlements easily converted to cash ensuring a lucrative illegal narcotic trade in a firmly established counterculture.

It takes a caring, loving, involved family to discourage criminal behavior by encouraging their loved one to exercise the courage to "Just Say NO"! It doesn't take a village just an individual to understand right from wrong and the consequences.

I could speculate that you are showing your prejudice. Heroin is common in the South Suburbs and there are plenty of good people getting caught up in it. Once addicted then yes, they will turn into thieves to support their habit. Homer Glen is having a terrible problem. Get them dried out and give them a choice. Treatment and back to the streets, where they need to test every two weeks for a few years, and jail if they screw up.

OR

Treatment and exile to a drug free area where they need to work hard for a few years. Build up a stake, and a better attitude so they can succeed in life.

I think many of the, "let em die hard-asses" here would be shocked who we deal with. I'm seeing late teens early 20's, graduates of St Ignatius, St Pats, Loyola, Rita, all same story, its starts with strong pharmaceutical pain pills for a sports injury and they get hooked. Its then cheaper and easier to get heroin.
Lives are ruined for the addict and the family. Some really good parents are crushed, but people do recover from this. If you don't think this is running thru some police families or going to effect someone you know and maybe even love, you are delusional.

Self-righteous hypocrites. Every time an officer does something clearly illegal, unethical, un constitutional or even just plain old stupid there are a few people on here crying for their support even when it is completely undeserved.

Now we're talking about junkies and hypes and the prevailing thought is let them die. Do I blame them for their use and addiction? Yes. Do I think anyone owes it to them to supply Narcan to cops and EMS to save them from overdoses? No. But I don't enjoy seeing them die, their fault or not. I've had enough addicts and alcoholics in my family. I have yet to see one funeral where everyone is relieved. I think people would be more relieved had they died in a car crash than the way they slowly killed themselves.

Some of you are going to bite your words when that dope hits closer to home. And you'll wish you had more compassion for someone else's kid or family when you see how much of this life is outside of your control. It's one thing to believe you are responsible to save them. It's another to say I don't care if they live or die. I pity you when those words haunt you because no one else cares whether someone lives or dies except you.

"Heroin is not just "in the ghetto". A lot of suburban kids/people are on it as well."

Since Mayor Daley II kicked over the 'jets and scattered their contents for fifty miles around as a sick, malicious going-away present to us all, it's as far out as Batavia now. West sub chiefs have been going nuts for quite a while now.

Put some license plate readers around the Independence exit on the Ike and you won't believe what'll come up.

Yeah...the projects coming down introduced dope to the western suburbs. Sure thing. By the way, since the jets coming down "scattered their contents for fifty miles around" why are the poor victimized suburbanites coming all the way into the city to get blows when surely there are some entrepreneurs much closer to home? Oh I know! They would like to support diversity and help aid the local economy in impoverished neighborhoods. It's their way of giving a little something to the less fortunate.

If they didn't take heroin, they wouldn't die. Simple. No sympathy for drug addicts. Zero. Signed, citizen

"btw, anyone use the DuckDuckGo search engine? It doesn't track you like the 'big ones'. They say their users privacy is their top concern."

Startpage is the bomb. Scrubs your information off the search, then sends it to Google. Set Startpage to "use EU servers only," and it puts things under the stricter Internet privacy laws over there.

Ghostery is another good program; blocks trackers. Go to a page like the Tribune and you'll see it stopping 15 or 20 of them. Can't dig coal or make steel here anymore, so it's come down to selling crappy little information about each other.

Guess the heroin OD capitol of the U.S.

Morgantown, W. Va.

The Obama "War On Coal" has really pushed some deep despair into the coal fields -- as Hillary found out during the primaries there.

64 years old, I've been banged up in car , bicycle and motorcycle crashes, plus in fights with police fighters, mentals and drunks. Got all kinds of injuries, not injuries from playing children's games like sports. Never was offered opiates, never asked for opiates, I'm doing just fine on 20 mile bicycle rides, 2 hour workouts on the gym , blood work is fine , not over weight , diabetic, or diagnosed with a bogus mental disorder like anxiety or depression treated with more rx drugs to cloud the brain. As the good book says " many are called, few are chosen" /I don't apologize for being at the right side of any bell curve that exists/ I became the superman that I am due to choices I made daily over a period of decades/ make different choices, get different outcomes/ western society is over, maybe I get 25 or 30 more years to live, don't regret having more/ the plug has been pulled and western society is down the drain/ thank my professors at UW Madison and yes st ignatious for that/asshole Jesuits at ignatious told me in 1966-1970 when I went there it was my fault the blacks rioted in the 60s and held me up on my way home from going to school there because as a white 14 year old kid I was the black mans oppressor so I was justly robbed/ they also said girls are sinful, a distraction , a source of evil , and other reasons to keep girls out of ignatious/ oh , but then the baby boom ended and they changed their tune so they could bring in more money / fuck ignatious and most of the asshole south side Irish I went to school with / legalized drugs, opiate drugs, everybody has a choice/ as robert plant sang, there are two roads you can follow/ which road one takes determines ones destination/ I took the right road / don't feel sorry for those who took the wrong road/ it was their choice/ as Lou reed sang in his song "heroin" , "I have made a big decision"/ make the right decisions, live the good life

What ever happened to personal responsibility? If you decide to do drugs, you suffer the consequences. Drug addicts spread disease, commit crimes and cost taxpayers a lot of money. We pay enough taxes supporting the welfare leeches, illegals and the refugees. I don't have to be happy someone died, but I also don't have to be really sad. Again, consequences of actions an individual decided to take.

Just over the weekend in LaPorte county Indiana (three counties from Chicago) there were three saves and possibly two DOA's from 'her-on'. The shit is everywhere, pushers need to be stood up and shot where they stand.

5/17/2016 11:32:00 AM

That's a disgusting and terrible thing to say!!! Why should they be forced to stand up before being shot? Just shoot them where they lie or sit!

Newsflash The Coal Industry has been dying a slow death the last 40 years. The few remaining mines left are non Union shops that when there's an accident they declare bankruptcy and leave this poor souls lying in the lurch. These people have a work ethic but their elected officials who are about as corrupt as the come who do nothing in the way of providing them educational training to better themselves.
There's a saying when people don't have hope they turn to dope whether it's using or selling. It's a situation that will only get worse.

The Progressive Democrats have made proactive policing impossible. More will die as a direct result of their political nonsense and that is a cold hard fact.

Who benefits from the police having their hands tied? Who loses?
