Check Your Ammo

From the comments - an explanation why all qualifying has been cancelled at the moment:
  • All p.o's after you qualify with your weapon check every bullet you are given in the box. Officers are finding defective and rusted bullets in what we are issued. from what we hear that is why qualifications have stopped. These bullets can misfire, jam or not go off at all.at this writing there is no special memo or explanation for this from our department
Old ammo? Improperly stored? Something to do with the steel (or nickel steel) cases instead of brass?

Or crappy manufacturing?

UPDATE: A few Range guys have written to say it's was manufacturing problem. Seems a portion of the side of the cases were actually bent into the case, causing a sharp edge that could hang up a bullet upon ignition of the powder. They explained that this would be a very bad thing. Like very very bad.

Perhaps buying cheaper ammo....reloads? Hubby (retired) went shooting with his brother. The new gun kept jamming. Took it to the local gun shop and it turned out that it was the ammo. He had bought some reloads and the rounds were not round.

But the inspector general will sweat firemens uniform allowance!

And will let Gene Williams retire with a badge after running a clouted cheating class for exempts and IAD flunkies.

Anyone see the latest video of cops being stripped by the supt for slamming an armed robber that tried to run a cop over to the ground. They through her down, after all she did, and now Eddie forwarded that to ipra asking them to take a second look saying it was brutality. This is just so fucked up. If there has ever been someone that doesn't have our backs, I'll start with this guy. He's going to turn out to be the absolute worst. I'll take jody any day over fast Eddie.

Really there is no point in bringing out videos to the public, all it causes is problems, the fact that this individual was robbing people at what point do we stop rewarding bad behavior by criminals. I don't see anything different then what any other law enforcement, or military personnel handle a fleeing felon, or cleering a house when someone poses a danger. At one point u have to put your hands on them without taking chances, only the offender is to blame here. Really u do not know their state of mind she could've jumped put her hands down and jump back in the car to still become a threat once again in a blink of an eye in less then .0002 seconds to be exact. Unbelievable!!!

Amazing that this department has negated officer's qualifying to return to active duty after they had suffered serious injuries to their shooting hand. Injuries so severe that their the shooting hands required multiple surgeries. Yet they were told NOT to go to the range to complete a course of fire. This course of fire would indicate if they were competent to return to duty. If any of these officer's get in an on or off duty shooting and are unable to perform or any injuries are a result of lack of competency this department will undoubtedly be found liable.
No bullets Rham.....rusted bullets Rham......no paper targets....... inoperable range(s )......lack of range personnel......but you better do that ethics training on line or the supervisors threaten you with disciplinary action. But no one cares about safety for the officer or the community. Shame....Shame...Shame.

There is stuff coming out of long term storage from God only knows where being imported because you can sell any thing it in the States. I have seen steel cased garbage that are not safe to shoot much less anything you would want to use to protect your life with. The worst is the aluminum cased stuff it is down right dangerous. There is even some of this stuff that has corrosive primers. If you carried something like the .40 S&W this wouldn't happen because there is no cheap surplus junk to purchase. You guys can win for loosing.

Tapped the magazine Racked the slide, ejected the round and finished the qual with no other issues. When I finished, I inspected the round which had a fireing pin indentation. I reloaded the round and it did fire but without the normal feel of the other rounds. I've been here ten years and this isn't the first time I've heard of ammunition recalls.

The officer in the video does an emergency takedown and the offender is secured. This is how we were trained in the academy. This video is not disturbing at all and absolutely text book take down. Dealing with criminals is never pretty and often very ugly. The politics in this city is disgusting and we have become the target of the liberals, BLM, media, and every police hater. Our police union must step up and condemn the fact that they are reopening cases that were already investigated and closed. It appears as though their is a hidden agenda on how eliminate officers and save on screwing them from their pensions. Eddie Johnson is yet another puppet controlled by RAHM. As soon as a problem was discovered, the range did due diligence to find the extent of the problem and track down the source. The bad ammo is newly manufactured, direct from Winchester and had only been stored since February. The issue was internal to Winchester and they are making it right and people will be losing their jobs over this. You cannot blame the City on this one.

Reminds me of the LeRoy Martin days when we didn't qualify for 3 years straight since they wanted to save money. Then they bought cheap ammo appropriately named "zero". This crap from a Supt. who wrote people up for not wearing a hat & you took time regardless if you had a clean record or not. Seems like Eddie Johnson has the same "low mentality & morality" that LeRoy had. Another thing in common is that both clowns are second choices. LeRoy knocked off Rudy Nimocks when Harold was mayor. Nimocks had the audacity to proclaim that several gold stars would be demoted. The targets ran to their clout, who then ran to Harold, and LeRoy was told to apply. The rest was the same old sordid history which has slowly run the ship into the ground.

Maybe someone can answer this? If you choose to use your own ammo. Will the department throw you under the bus in a shooting?From the research i've done, I really like Speer Gold Dots 124 grain or 147. Also really like Federal HST in 124 & 147 grain. I'm not opposed to the Winchester Ranger T, but just seems like the Dept is having issues with it. I've also seen it under perform in Ballistic Gelatin tests (not expanding, over penetrating).

Here's the order....
"3. 9mm Luger (parabellum) Caliber, 115 through 147 grain jacketed hollow point bullet, standard, +P, and +P+."

Obviously the ammo I've chosen falls under the category. I just don't trust the City.

I left the job about 12 years ago for another department. Just curious what brand this bad ammo is? When I left, CPD issued Winchester Ranger which has a good reputation.

When I first got hired, we carried revolvers and were issued Zero brand ammo (38 +P LHP), which I heard was owned by some alder-creature's relative (go figure). That shit was like shooting black powder it was so smokey and dirty. I never carried it and always carried Winchester 158gr LHP. In the end of 91 when recruits had to buy a 9mm, the Department issued Zero in 9mm for the primary auto shooters. That lasted a few months until it was discovered the bullets were not seated in the cases properly and either pushed in to the case (over-pressure) or crept out of the case (under-pressure and jams magazine.)

My advice is to buy your own quality ammo that is Department approved. The GO (guess now its called a Uniform Order) says you can carry your own. Don't be cheap, and don't EVER trust what you are issued by CPD.

Just another symptom of Rahm's deliberate decision
to run CPD on the cheap...

Cutting budgeted manpower.
Refusing to hire.
Refusing to replace obsolete/
worn-out equipment.
Gutting training, especially
firearms training.

And on that note...
Shoot/Don't Shoot,
Target Discrimination/
Trigger Discipline are
all PERISHIBLE skills.

With the current state of affairs due to the JVD/
McDonald shooting incident, cooler heads aren't
prevailing because Rahm is desperately trying to
prevent any association of that tragic incident with
the deliberate, ongoing decision to divert money
from CPD.

This is his "Sticking it in the Cops ear."

Rahm blew into town with the intention from the start
to "save money" by starving CPD of manpower, resources
and training and spending those dollars on the abundance
of silly shit and to pay back his political donors and pander
to the Catered-To Constituency which includes Dude Inc.
and it's armed wing which is currently doing the m/fing fool
with impunity.

"The Police are the problem?"

Not as much as they would have people to believe...

Ladies and gentlemen,

You guys have to be the hardest headed people I have ever worked with. When are you going to learn? Be it Eddie, or don't call me G-a-r-r-y, or any one else in command, regardless of what they think of themselves they're all just pawns for the politician. And the politician is going to do what ever it takes to save his or her own ass from having to have to find a job. So if that means throwing the superintendent to the wolves well then they're just inconsequential, which makes us expendable.

Compare yourselves to a politician or a boss. We're not elected nor entitled to a large compensation. We're just that person who comes to work, goes to roll call, gets the go - get them speech, then leaves to go find a car with a working PDT let alone if the car even has one. Then depending on the weather checked to see if the air, heat or windshield wipers work. And once we accomplished that go gas the old girl up, get our coffee, and start our day WORKING, which basically consists of being mother-fucked, and antagonized till we either walk away totally pissed off or finally break and regret our actions later on as we wonder what we're going to do now for work or worse yet ponder our fate before sentencing. All the while the offender is back on the street empowered to commit more crimes against those that now seek to improverish or in prison us.

And everyday we do this. Taking call after call of bullshit that no rational person would dream of calling the police for. Or chasing a person with a gun call to only be projected by the media as the bad guy several years later after a video surfaces. And all for what? So we can be put on public display, subject to second guessing and criticism by the very people who don't have the balls to stand up for themselves or for what is right and just. And as for all you media talking heads out there that sell yourselves morning, noon and night get on an elevator in 26/cal sometimes along with a bunch of copers and thugs. Listen to how even the thugs tell us we're the bad guys now as they laugh and just shake their heads disbelief. You'll see just how much you've empowered the thug with the unlimited media bashing of CPD.

Finally, to the several thousand politicians in Cook County who have stolen our pension and now are working very hard to eliminate it all together realize we are only required to answer calls. We are not required to be PROACTIVE. You had your way with us far to long. It's your turn to twist in the wind now. Sorry sir, no inattention to duty here, I answer all my calls and even insisted on writing a case report for the vic. Just check my video. Just look at that customer service / social work. I really gave the perception that I cared.

You think things have been bad so far? Just remember, summer is eight weeks away and along with it warm weather.

Department issued ammo has been pure garbage
for the last several years.

Whatever ammo the department gives you,
use it for next year's qualification. Do not trust
your life or your co-workers lives to Rahm and his
brand of cut-throat bean counterism...

There is plenty of excellent and still reasonably priced,
high performance ammo out there.

Not necessarily from the big manufacturers either...

I get it, the City buys on the cheap (Except when it come to construction cost over-runs, then it the cash cow), but slow your roll here. If they got a bad shipment od ammo how is it the fault of the buyer? This sits on the shoulders of the vendor/supplier. I know a few range people, and most of our range officers are top notch. If they knew their was or even could be a problem they would hit the stop button immediately. The problem was noticed a week earlier, but it takes time to go through the entire shipment of ammo. C'mon, think about it rationally, and don't just look for another reason to bitch, whine and complain. We do enough of that as it is under the current conditions, and we get fed a healthy handful of shit reasons to do it, but this is one that has limited scope of finger pointing and it shouldn't always get pointed where you think.

As a civilian it is obvious to me what is going on with the new video:
Rahm needs to have even more evidence for public that the CPD are problem and not him;
Rahm rejects all other potential candidates for Superintendent since they do not have HIS back;
Rahm finds Johnson who will do anything to be the Superintendent;
Johnson tells Rahm that he knows of a OLD CPD video where the officers involved are not hooked up but acted like jerks plus it involves a woman;
Rahm manipulates the Alderman to get Johnson on-board;
Johnson gives us a couple of days of early manipulation and then releases the video;
Citizens are way more interesting in Price dying to even care.

If the ammo that the City is issuing has bad crimps or high primers, that is ammo that was hand loaded. By a careless amateur.

The name brand ammo manufactures' manufacturing process is all done by machines. The quantities that they run have been designed to take human handling out of the process as much as possible.

As for old ammo going bad: Doubt it. Unless really shitty storage conditions and a very long time.

In the late 1950's the wreckage of a missing WWII B-24 was found in the Libyan desert. The plane was missing over 15 years prior. The ammo was recovered and tested and found to meet all specs

These places have good duty ammo in stock. However, they don't ship to Chicago addresses, police or not. Find a suburban friend who will accept shipments of ammo and buy as many boxes or cases of (1000) as you can afford. if 2 or three people split a case of 1000, your price will be decent. Don't waste your money buying duty ammo in consumer packaging at Bass Pro or Cabelas, as you'll get ripped off and pay out the ass.

These places have 50 round boxes of 9mm Federal HST 124, 147 (standard and +p), Federal Hydra Shok, Gold dot, Golden Saber, etc in stock. They have 40 cal and 45 too. Buy your own and feel confident. Don't be cheap, unless your life is cheap.

Come to the suburbs. We make as much money, and I qualified with my personally owned AR-15, a dept. AR, a dept. shotgun, my primary side arm, my back up side arm, and 3 off duty guns of various calibers. When the next group was qualifying, I was welcome to do the course of fire again. Same with the next group. I shot about 300 rounds of Winchester white box in .40, 5.56, 9mm, .380 and .38 today. We did shooting behind barricades, stopping a squad and getting out and shooting, transition from rifle to sidearm, etc.

Chicago is shitting on you guys. Get the fuck out. They don't want the police anyway, and aside from the southwest and northwest sides, (AKA the working people who pay the taxes for the rest of the welfare leeches to live on) they don't deserve you.

And for those hard chargers that think the "suburbs" aren't as real as the city, I don't mean Kenilworth or Highland Park. There are plenty of towns besides Chicago where there is work to do, and it's meaningful and has a positive impact.

Per the vid http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-chicago-police-video-released-met-20160422-story.html the city will screw that cop. The city will say that there was no need to grab her by the collar, spin her back and around, and to the ground; though the cop never let her go, but controlled her going down. The city will maintain that the cop could have just as easily cuffed her while she was standing; never mind about academy take down methods. Yep cop is screwed. And the officer who Tased her, will be second guessed for using the Taser on her. Another cop screwed. All screwed to feed the mob, all because Rahm hid a vid in order to be elected.

The city deserves all the crime it gets. Do what you got to do and no more. Not saying to be fetal, but don't stick your necks out. And remember the cameras are not your friend, because while the POS can do anything they want to flee or resist arrest, you are held to a standard that of a God in comparison. By stripping the officers in the latest video it's obvious no one has our backs! These officers did everything correct when dealing with an armed felon. The victim was on TV tonight standing up for the police saying that the officers did nothing wrong. What is wrong with this department? When of civilian ,a victim can see that the officers did nothing wrong but yet our superintendent strips them .
I can just tell the officers to go to work, answer your jobs ,do your reports and go home safe.
The police have gotten beaten up far too long from the public and the news media, now it appears from the higher ups for making a good arrest.
How do you expect the police to handle a person with a gun who just committed a felony?

In regard to .38 Special +P.
There are smaller companies that load it to the

That's what a .38 +P is SUPPOSED to be.

Did a little looking and there is indeed a lot of steel-cased ammo coming out of Russia. The brands are Tula and Wolf. I thought it went out with the materials shortages during WWII, when the Germans went to steel cases late in the war and had numerous problems.

Didn't know that the AK rifles are set up to shoot steel cases. The AR-15 series is not. I see reports of a lot of case head separations when using brass cases in especially the .223 AKs; the AK has a looser chamber, and it extracts more violently than the AR.

For pistol stuff, it's cheap but I see also many reports of primers seated cocked, extraction problems, etc.

Use of steel-cased ammo will void your warranty in some weapons that are not intended for it.

Someone keep track of what is causing CPD the problems -- maker's name and brand, headstamp, type of bullet, and the LOT NUMBER that should be stamped on the boxes. Get the info together and we'll have a better idea of what to avoid.

Putin sends his fighters so low they're throwing a wake, buzzing our destroyers at 30 feet altitude, to the point that SecState said "We could have justifiably shot them down," so we line up to buy Putin's cheap ammo.

Money isn't everything...

Buck a shot is nothing when your life is at stake. I would stick with premium-grade American-made brass-cased ammo for duty.

Hell yeah I can blame the city -- I qualified almost a month ago walking around with the defected ammo they issued to me, and didn't hear a fucking peep about it until fellow officers brought it to my attention a few days ago. They announce all kinds of useless bs everyday at roll call from all the administrative messages posted in the C/O book-- extend parking courtesy to this one or that one, vacancies in districts X,Y,Z, etc. etc., but they couldn't get a message out to all the districts warning officers to check or replace the shit ammo the department just gave them. And this department is supposed to be part of a first "world class" city?? What a fucking joke! And they wonder why people are leaving in caravans and no one wants to apply for this job.

"If the ammo that the City is issuing has bad crimps or high primers, that is ammo that was hand loaded."

Take an awful lot of "pulling the handle" to satisfy a city contract, wouldn't it?

"The name brand ammo manufactures' manufacturing process is all done by machines. The quantities that they run have been designed to take human handling out of the process as much as possible."

4/23/2016 08:08:00 PM

Whether a one-at-a-time loading press or the automated high-speed machines used by manufacturers, everything has to be set up right. That is the key -- you can be running out crap in a blur, 20,000 rounds/minute. Machines can make more mistakes and faster mistakes than any one person. >grin<

Different strokes for the guy with a custom bench-rest rifle. Sorts his cases into lots, trims them all to exact length, measures the neck wall thickness, individually weighs out powder charges +- 1/10 gr., seats bullets to exact depth, and spins the completed rounds in a fixture to check for concentricity. This is the stuff that makes one ragged hole at 500 yards. Some handloading gets real scientific. Little mark on the face of the rifle chamber, and a little punch mark on the head of each cartridge, and you always match them up. It's about eliminating variations. That's another world, though.

Have heard of guys getting jammed up for using handloads on duty. Lawyer screaming "he wanted to kill, he was making overloaded, extremely powerful rounds, far in excess of department specs..."

Just buy the good Gold Dots or similar.

Not trying to bust balls here, but it's not the ammo, it's your gun. As another person pointed out, mechanical things break. Sigs have a parts replacement and inspection cycle, as do ALL guns. Usually it's 5000 rounds for various springs. A good practice is the gun should be completely (all springs, components, etc) disassembled and inspected by a certified armorer every 2000 rounds or two years. You're probably about 10 or 11 inspections short of maintaining a piece of equipment that could save your life, or the life of your partner.

Glocks, contrary to popular misconceptions, do not work forever, They too must be inspected, cleaned, lubed, and have certain parts replaced.

Be smart and safe. Become a certified armorer and do it yourself. Classes are cheap and easy and are held in the Chicago area every year for all of the approved guns.

All excellent advice. My buddy's Colt Officer's .45 developed a crack in the chamber; the part of the forging that holds the recoil link was about to tear out of the barrel! That would have been a real shatter-the-handgrips-off the gun, blow-out-the-magazine-type spectacular.

At the very least, know your weapon. Study the manual until you can name each part correctly, and practice until you can field-strip and reassemble it blindfolded. You may never need to actually do that, but it builds familiarity and confidence.
