Taking the Day Off

SCC is tired, it's hot out, it's Sunday and we have a day we have to burn.

Open post for Sunday - we'll moderate comments sparingly, but you guys should take a day off, too.

During the last few months it seems all the new orders the Department are issuing or revising are aimed at this CALEA® certification the Department wants to obtain. After looking into the CALEA® company (yes it is a private company not a government agency, just Google it) how does this help the members of the Chicago Police Department? After examining the website for CALEA® I found job openings in Chicago for a CALEA® Special Agent (“Responsible for employee and public safety; protection of facilities, real estate and assets; and the protection of our customer's lading through police activities, security services, and crime prevention and safety initiatives, starting salary is $71,000.”) (Key word is customers) So what advantage does a CALEA® certification have for a Police department? This is not a government agency, CALEA® also certifies school campus security guards.

The 012 squad pilot program is a complete disaster. Not enough manpower to run something like this. Why even bother with the thing? For the upcoming 10 hour days?

Well, why not? I've been reading (and enjoying...and agreeing with) this blog for the last seven years...I guess it's time to post my first response to it. Since this seems to be (more or less) an open post...

I spent the weekend commemorating (NOT celebrating) the 100th anniversary of the worst disaster (in terms of lives lost) ever to befall Chicago. Friday morning, there was a small gathering of people (I was one of them) counting down to the exact moment (7:30 am) that the S. S. Eastland capsized to port and took 844 souls with her as she fell. There were several other ceremonies that day. One at 10:00 am, which involved several descendants of the survivors of the disaster recalling the stories their grandparents related to them...another at 1:00 pm, which emphasized the role the coast guard, fire department, and police department played during the rescue operations...and the recovery of those who were beyond rescue. There were a coast guard, CFD, and CPD boat present at both ceremonies. During the first, they were saluted for the role their predecessors played in the disaster. During the second, each of them laid a bouquet of flowers into the exact site on the river where the disaster took place. I thought both ceremonies were very tasteful and respectful...a far cry from the disgusting spectacle of a barge on the river being set afire (ineptly) to "celebrate" the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire.

Tonight (Saturday), 844 candles were lit at the site of the disaster...one candle for each of its victims. Anyone who truly loves this city (even if, as I do, they hate most of the people in charge of it) would have been hard put to not shed a tear or two during these ceremonies. They recalled the determination that the survivors demonstrated to continue on because they loved this city--and this country. They recalled the effort they expended to make Chicago the world-class city that it...was...in spite of their losses. People who had come over from the old world (predominantly from Czechoslovakia and Bohemia) who had happily become citizens of their new country, and who were willing to work to make their dreams come true here...and who continued to do so even after what happened. It was smaller--but no less poignant--than the 10th anniversary ceremonies of the 9/11 attacks in New York a few years ago.

Aldercreature Ed Burke spoke at both ceremonies on Friday. Amazingly, even he demonstrated a respect for the occasion. I actually counted it as a positive in my assessment of the man. Nowhere near enough to balance the overwhelming negatives he's accumulated in my eyes over the years, but a positive nevertheless. The flames that will burn him eternally in hell for the harm he's done this city will be one or two degrees cooler because of what he did on Friday...:)

That's about it. Sorry for being so long-winded, but I just thought this was something that was appropriate to be mentioned here. SCC seems to share the same mindset I do...he loves the city, but hates its "leaders." Just a reminder that it's still possible for Chicagoans to recover from a horrible disaster like the Eastland...or the current city council...and stand tall as one of the capitals of the world...if its citizens are willing to expend the effort. (Perhaps a pipe dream, but some of us haven't ENTIRELY given up hope yet...)

Be careful when getting your homes soundproofed from the airplane noise on the Far Northwest Side of town (60656 zip code). It seems quite a few homes have been burglarized after getting their homes done. One company under suspicion has a Mullane family member working for them, you see where I'm going with this.

Friday night in 015 my nephew and his partner made a traffic stop. The passenger punches one officer and my nephew leaves the driver to assist his partner. During the fight passenger bites my nephew while battering both officers. They recover a gun from bad guy too. There are a dozen "citizens"' all with their cellphones. Everybody filming the event.

There are a few ways to fund the pensions and the Mayor thought he had a bargain with most of the unions. The court ruling only speeds up the complete phase out of healthcare. We will know in the next month or 2 what the 2016 contribution rates are for retirees and I will guarantee that almost the full cost will be passed on to the member. City will contribute the least amount to keep the pension funds post Korshack $65 and $95 around for one more year. Be prepared for another 30% increase in your healthcare cost. He is going to get retiree reform one way or another.

The "spirits deserve a much needed break" looking at today's Sunday times paper looks like the girl who committed suicide in Texas says " my daughter did not kill herself" now durbin says the "nation must know what happened" launching a very expensive taxpayer funded investigation! Meaning the copper and jail personnel will be dragged all over the news, the court etc.. Wow no matter what happens with the black community the police are responsible. From the child killed by murderous thugs in the stroller from the lies of ferguson, lies of the honorable John Burge, lies of New York, lies everywhere but police are at fault! All you younger coppers please take notice it's much better to hand the people that don't want the police a rd number than to be thrown overboard and the political bosses throw an anchor to you, back each other up is the most important what matters? "Blue lives matter" don't be the next sheep lined up for slaughter it's not worth losing your family, pension, home, freedom to catch some thug use the old dispatch saying "get your crayons ready" here's your report have a nice day!!

Until we get someone in the White House that is pro follow the law like Donald Trump be extremely careful in everything you do! Lastly may God Bless police officers everywhere who da fantastic job holding back the animals from total anarchy!

Oh boy, another failed Chicago "event"! It was heard that the Margarita Festival held at Northerly Island Saturday nite was a total disaster. According to many pissed off patrons the organizers sold to many drink tickets, ran out of the namesake booze and then pushed everyone out of the event an hour before the scheduled ending time. The event organizers said they would refund drink ticket monies but were unprepared to do that and the line to get a refund was over an hour long and all the while they were telling people they had to leave. Many also said that the promoters advertised complimentary water for non-drinkers and designated drivers but then charged for it once inside the venue. But of course the city got their big bucks for limited parking at Soldier Field blocks away from the action! Can this shithole of a city get anything right?!

On 24-Jul,last Friday, one of the most respected officers in the 010 Dist retired. Officer Dannye Ward worked till his last possible day and retired at age 63. Many of you officers might remember Dannye as the one officer who would not kiss Alderman Dixons' ass every time she wanted something, and as a result, it cost Dannye a spot in Neighborhood Relations, as he was dumped before he even served one day, (way to go Commander) So,... Dannye went back to Beat 1014 where he never slowed down. Dannye Ward was the best street copper I've have ever seen, and I've worked with the best. He could smell a hot car a block away and busted drug dealers by actually getting in line as a customer and confronting the sellers face to face. The last few years Dannye mostly worked as the fill-in desk Sgt, where as you might expect, he was the best damn desk Sgt in the 010 District. I am proud to have worked for 25yrs with Dannye and I hope some of you officers who read S.C.C. and knew Dannye would wish him well...Thanks guys, stay safe......Wolfman..30yrs 010 Dist.

The third watch incidents cars were done away with because the 965 Incident team didn't think that they should have to start at 2000 hrs for the rest of the summer to cover all the early morning shootings. They are to busy being a robbery/burglary team that doesn't catch robbers or burglars.

Think abut getting some help with what has become a very necessary part of police culture in this town and a way of getting the truth and fighting back. Certainly our "union" is no real help there.

On my day off I saw the new movie MR. HOLMES. Most cops are mystery and Sherlock Holmes fans and will enjoy this movie. If anyone see this, try to find the homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Hint, it comes from the movie THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.

The video in the hood only gets released when it shows the Police doing something questionable. If it supports the Police it disappears. I firmly believe that there is cell phone video in Ferguson of Brown attacking the Police Officer that would support the Officers use of deadly force. You cant do $hit in the hood without someone pulling out their Obama phone and recording it. Since it did not support the criminal Brown no one came forward.

Rumor going around that new Commander in 009th Dist, Cmdr Godsel has already angered the 3rd watch. Godsel has disbanded the 906 team, taken away all overtime at 3rd watch and got rid of all rapids (1700 hr start) We hear this has caused serious baby sitting issues for the boys in blue at 1700 start. This is the same crew that for the past 2 years has been told they been been keeping 3rd watch above water with, ANOV's , CONTACT CARDS, MOVERS, PARKERS, CURFEWS and everything else the watch commander needed. Hey boys don't be so surprised that you worked harder and can't have a simple request honored, that's the CPD WAY..work hard and we'll screw you later. I see numbers going way down, oh well what are they gonna do, stand up roll calls, monitor your jobs and lunches, longer check off.. BIG DEAL. You can't get a day off and been pushed around ;ong enough.....time to PUSH BACK. Oh yeah, threaten you with midnights HAHAHA you think they are gonna move the already dogs on midnights to the very busy 3rd watch, I SAY NO WAY! FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

Rumor has it the original poster is a bitch. Grow up. You guys are lucky to have Godsel. He supports the troops and has your back.

Unless you have run a successful blog, I don't think you can appreciate what a HUGE daily grind it is. Especially one that requires moderating comments.

My last glass of wine tonight is a toast to you SCC, for the marvelous, thankless job you do. Then when you get home you do double duty on the blog so people can get vetted, factual info on what is going on in Shitcago.

Thanks,

OMG! Godsel has angered the 3rd watch! The reality is that Commanders are no longer able to control the amount of time due given (thanks to cry babies like you and your union for listening to you) and 06 cars are on the chopping block all over the city .....especially area central per deputy chief. I'm sick of listening to the whining pansy coppers. Here is the deal, Godsel is a great guy. He cares about the coppers that work for him, he is highly approachable, and will be 100% straight up w you. If you are the hard charger you elude to, nothing will change the drive you have to do your job. Being a dog does nothing but diminish your own integrity. You are either the police or you are not. Don't shit on one of the few great bosses out there because you have to find a babysitter and work your full tour.

To the whiner in 009:

Cry me a river... your useless 906 overtime team is gone. And guess what. . . coppers all over the city have baby sitting issues. If 3rd Watch don't work for you, go to midnights! How about you go to a real district like 007, 011 or 015 and see what those coppers have to deal with every day. You're lucky to have a guy like him as your commander. He made a command decision disbanding that useless team. Embrace the change, punk!

To the whiner from 009. Tell Cmdr Godsel to his face. He's a great guy, straight shooter and won't fuck with workers. If he disbanded that 906 team, it was for the good of everybody in the district, and I mean the troops. Babysitting issues. Grow the fuck up. The rest of the world is supposed to revolve around your schedule? Hire a sitter you cheap prick. Just like everyone else with kids has to do you self absorbed jagoff.

The good thing for you is that your ankle will return to its normal size in a few days. Hillary's ankles don't have that option.

A perfect example of what is wrong with this department. It's called doing your job. Have pride in your job. Despite all of the shit you talk, numbers won't go down. They will stay the same or just go up. There are a lot of coppers who still have honor and take pride in their profession. Have a nice day.

MFF is a joke. They will get you to volunteer and then abuse you. You'll be pulling details like standing around all night watching 20 people protest or get mobilized to stand guard at crime scenes where the fools can't grieve respectfully like the rest of society. You'll buy all of your own turtle gear and rarely, if ever get to wear or utilize it, but it will look really tactical stuffed into the duffle bag you'll have to carry with you every night. In essence, you'll be used, I mean lied to and abused rather than the City hiring enough officers to free up a few dozen from Patrol to put a citywide unit together.

We can fill volumes with what the police do correctly, and the public never hears about it.
Just an arrest, bad guy got what was coming, post that video citizens!

There are not supposed to be any 06 teams anywhere in the city per a memo issued from the Chief of Patrol's office in late June. Each district gets three tact teams and districts needing more must get approval from the Chief of Patrol. However, they are to be designated as 64, 65 teams, and so on, not 06 teams. He is following policy.
If he wanted to keep your team, he could justify it easily in 009 with the activity crime-wise there. Maybe your activity was the problem?

The other day in 005 an inspector stopped a PO and asked him if he had an in car camera microphone on his person. The officer said no. The inspector then went into the squad car and looked for the mics, which were disabled in the glove box. The officer was written up. The following day, in 005, the in car camera techs came in and did an audit of all in car cameras and microphones. I was told that over 90% of the microphones were disabled in some way. I was also told that the inspectors would be enforcing this as soon as audits have been completed.

They don't look like service bars. Why not just scan real service bars on a blue background? Or just take a pic of your dress uniform sleeve? I have some extras I was thinking of trading in for a star and some bars.
