$2.4 Million for One Block

Just one block in the 015 District (Austin) has received $2.4 million in State funding in five years. But you won't find it in street improvements. That might make sense:
  • In just five years, the State of Illinois dedicated more than $2.4 million to the 4800 block of West Adams Street in Austin.

But don't look for new developments or freshly paved roads on that stretch of street, because that's not where the money went. No, $2.4 million is the amount of money the state spent on incarcerating people for drug offenses from that block alone.
Holy Crap Batman.

DNAInfo.com has a link to the entire study of how much money is poured into the Department of Corrections based on incarceration rates. It's nothing we hadn't suspected before, but getting it all laid out in a spreadsheet and it's pretty impressive how much certain neighborhoods are a drain on society.

How about we just find an isolated island or a dozen someplace and put them there until they become civilized?

It has to be cheaper than the current prison system.

Yes, locking people up for their involvement in illicit drugs is a drain on society. For the dealer, prison. For the user, drug court and hopefully residential drug treatment with a clean record for successful completion. It is a medical problem, not just a law enforcement problem. You cannot arrest your way out of this.

"...$2.4 million is the amount of money the state spent on incarcerating people for drug offenses from that block alone..." --In five years!

Now let's ask ourselves how much illicit drug money is attracted into that same
community in just one year eh?

After the illicit drugs are purchased the money is in effect laundered as the Air Jordan's, smart phones, new cars, and real estate, etc are purchased. The money flows to corporations and then into campaign contributions for clouted politicians. There's ta dollars generated.

We're taling hundreds of millions of dollars over five years yeah?

Now is it any wonder why the political apparatus doesn't want to do anything that will seriously effect that kind of cash flow?

Look at both sides of the coin my friends. This is not an endorsement just saying it is what it is.

Various groups want to play this to their advantage to obtain more power. Like getting more COPS on the beat so you can get a bigger budget and more promotions. more military toys, etc. We get it.

The politicians play it for more so-called crime fighting initiatives whereas they can appoint a council of connected cronies with six-figure salaries and pensions and bloated budgets.

Yeah, no-one in power wants to fix that crisis. They want to use that crisis as a tool for power and money and not let it go to waste. Should the public not agree with their plan just let the crisis fester and grow until they see things your way. Ultimately the public will cave wanting something, ANYTHING to be done and only then he-ha see.

El Chapo is large and in charge in this city yeah? oney talks and the leaders do not care where it comes from

How much money is attracted here via Obamacare when Garry takes a gang bangers gun off the street and the gang punishes that gang banger with a violation for losing the weapon with a beating or gsw to the leg?

A catch-22 no doubt.

They don't always hit their target either as we all know so throw some innocent kids that end up in the E/R or the cemetery. Not to mention the shooting between adversaries that go to the E/R.

There's a lot of subsidized medical care that flows into city coffers enriching first responders, doctors, Oh and let's not forget big pharma!!!

If the violence were to stop what's gonna replace all that money? Yeah see, that's why there's no intention of stopping it.

The gang bangers are Rahm Emanuel's job creators. Enterprises that are taking the risks creating jobs, things that the glorified corporate CEO's are unwilling or unable to do. Rahm's entrepreneurs

Sad but true. I don't endorse it but that's the reality of it.

Bring in some more criminal illegal immigrants with no background checks, hand them some ID's, some drivers licenses so we can no longer call them undocumented and get this crisis going....am I right Rahm?

We're talking a billion dollar operation as large as any corporation and you know how the leaders sell out to the money. Look at the flip side, the dark side, look beyond what the lapdog MSM media shows you

Ever hear of Broken Windows Economics?

That $2.4 million represents an increase in the velocity of money that would not otherwise have occurred. Look at it as though it is one of Rahm's economic stimulus programs.

What would happen if all these gang bangers on the block just stopped doing what they are doing?

I mean if they just sat there and collected social welfare, because lord knows no corporation is going to hire them anyways.

Hell the corporations now even let kids with four year degrees sit idle so don't even go there and play the get an education card: "they don't have the higher math and/or science score" bullshit.

We have STEM grads working flipping burgers right now the system is so fucked up

Hey I don't like it but this is how politicians think. When a bullet comes out the barrel of a gun the velocity of money increases and each time the money changes hands it gets taxed. Give us that Obamacare subsidy money, federal grant money, use the tools and play the moral high ground that you are concerned for peoples safety bullshit.

Yeah, a $2.4 mil burden on society but how do you define the word society?

Depends on what the definition os "is" is some politicians would say.

Are the people on that block part of 'society'? Are the people on that block benefiting from the drug sales or burdened by the incarceration costs ya think?

Just who's society are we talking about ya know? The corporate run society isn't working for them I think and that's the root of the problem.

Democracy isn't working either. Overwhelmingly the people voted against banker bailouts and the leaders did them anyway. No big banking execs went to jail for their frauds. What society do the bankers belong to, or do the politicians belong to certainly it must be different than the society in the hood as their are different laws and different standards of conduct.

It is what it is. kids.

Throw in all the other crime that happens on that block, shootings, homicides, battery, theft and you are well over $5 million I would bet. I was watching a comedian the other night, she was talking about how she was in Afghanistan doing a show for the troops. She said that she went on a tour and the military was saying how they have built miles of new roads, schools, hospitals and police departments for the people of Afghanistan. She then said that was great and wanted to know when the military was going to invade Detroit? I found that to be hilarious and spot on.

From Chicago's Million Dollar Blocks.com:

In other words, we are not simply punishing people for the crimes they commit. We are also punishing them for the places where they live, the schools that failed them and the employers that rejected them. And, without question, we are punishing them for the darkness of their skin. These factors work together to shape who gets portrayed as a criminal, and who escapes such portrayals.

From Ronald Reagan:

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

I grew up in Austin, the eastern boundary being the railroad tracks at Kenton Ave. (4600 W). The first shithole that occurred with "new residents" began along the 3-flat apts. west of Cicero Ave. on Adams and Quincy Sts. in Resurrection parish. In the 1960's, it was a great, safe neighborhood. Today it's among the worst shitholes in Shiraq.

Does a plumber go out the door in the morning thinking "How can I bust the waste stack, flood the customer's house, and make my life as miserable as possible?"

Same thing here. Guy wanted to issue a warning and get on with the day.

"You could plainly see that this was a troubled woman."

Now coming out -- on top of self-reported PTSD, depression, epilepsy, previous suicide attempts, and THC in the tox screen -- "There were "approximately 25 to 30 horizontal faint ... linear superficial incised wounds" up to an inch long on her body. He said they were likely self-inflicted, weeks earlier."

"It's sad that she killed herself. But this was in no way law enforcement's fault."

"Amen." Agreed -- a lot of bad things come from people doing the Totentanz, The Dance Of Death with others, or with themselves. Like we had here, guy kept drumming on someone's car until the owner put the machete away and went and got a pistol instead. Compulsive, something bad going to blow but neither can stop.

Don't escalate. Take it down a notch, peeps. Exhale. Think a minute. Walk away. You might see the sun come up again if you try that. Respect others the way you want to be respected. Got to put some in to get some out. Show some love, some concern. Don't know what else to advise.

Where this is absent, that's where the police are forced to come in.
