This was Prophetic

  • City Treasurer Miriam Santos made a last-ditch attempt Tuesday to stave off a move by her former political patron, Mayor Richard Daley, to cut her power and remove her from overseeing more than $8 billion in politically sensitive city pension fund investments.

At a news conference in Chicago, Santos said the city`s four pension funds were being mismanaged, and she issued a list of proposed reforms.

``The pension funds will be Chicago`s S&L crisis 20 years from now if we continue down the road of mismanagement,`` she said. ``There is a lack of accountability that must be addressed.``

Standing beside former U.S. Sen. Adlai Stevenson, who supported her efforts, she said most pension funds are underfunded, and she warned that property tax payers could be asked to make up the difference in the future.

Santos, who also said she wanted to stay on the boards that oversee the pensions so she can be an independent voice, then left the city for more lobbying in Springfield, where the General Assembly is holding its fall veto session.

But her tactic may fall short, because Daley operatives in the Illinois Senate said they were set to push a bill Wednesday that would, among other things, give Daley the option of removing Santos from the pension boards and replacing her with someone who will follow instructions.
And everyone remembers what happened to Miriam Santos, right? Daley got his "... someone who will follow instructions" and we've been paying the price ever since. Everything Santos predicted would happen...has happened...with astonishingly exactitude, so any claims that this was "unforeseen" or "circumstances beyond control" are pretty much lying to us all.

At a recient luncheon, a Pension Board member quoted a letter written by an Alderman which said pretty much the same thing. That our pension funds were being mismanaged and underfunded.

That letter was written in October 1915.
Almost a century ago.

Wasn't she also charged (and maybe convicted) of some type of wire fraud or something similar?! I don't quite recall the entire set of facts on that. She was right about this though. Someone please come forward and throw Daley under the bus before that fat little stuttering fuck dies and gets away with his crimes.

Don't worry, with Chicago's great bond rating, Rahm can float a new set of municipal bonds to pay for the pension debt.

What could go wrong?

Interestingly, Stevenson was the last decent, real old time Democrat to hold state-wide office.

They fucked him too.

Ahhhh yes...
Miriam Santos.

Bless her heart, she saw and RECOGNIZED what
Shortshanks was trying to do with our pension money...

The rest of elected officialdom at the state, local and federal levels saw and recognized too.

So did the public.
So did local and national print, television and radio
media...

So...
How on God's green earth did THIS narration become
solely about The Police getting "IT" stuck in their collective ear and Fire having to "learn how to BLEED?"

If we remember the series of events correctly, Rahm hadn't even taken the oath of office when he started his shit-talking.

As a matter of fact, one of the first things he did when he jumped off his flight from D.C. was go to a firehouse and shit-talk the firemen.

Typical shit-assed thinking to go to a place of "business" and talk shit to people held captive
by rules/regulations/condition of employment.

"Oh wow! Rahm is a REAL tough-guy cuz he
went hard at those out-of-control Fire guys and
Coppers who've had it too sweet and too easy
for too long!"

No answer to the question of whether or not Rahm
made same such visitations to hot-beds of industry and civic pride like 16th & Lawndale, Chicago & Hamlin, 59th & Loomis, Laramie & Lake or even the latest jewel in the civic crown, 109th & Morgan...

You know...
Where a SEVEN year old CHILD was set upon by two grinning goblins with guns who popped up like the malignant jack-in-the-boxes they are...

>Muthafuckin' BOOIINNGG!<
"Whachoobeboutfool!"

>POP-POP-POPPITY-POP-POP!<

Yeah Rahm...
Why didn't you jump off your charter and sally forth
to THESE places?

Lol... Rahm is scared of rubbing against m/fers who ain't giving a fuck about rules and he not having any notion of sticking "IT" in their ears because they WILL
stick him in his pointy ears back...

Time for accountability. How about a civil suit with punitive damages for all those who had a willful disregard for their fiduciary responsibilities? And undoubtedly, it is not out of the question to pursue criminal charges for their personal conduct and the engineering of "investments" with the above industry norms of personal compensation of those entrusted to oversee the pension funds investments. Many lawyers and "investment" managers have made personal fortunes at the expense of their democrat loved rank and file blue collar types. Again, who will step up to the plate and punish the wrongdoers?

And then Daley, being the federal informant he was/is, had Santos set up and indicted for the very things every politician does every day, solicit campaign money from companies that do business with the city! Daley and his criminal family alone are responsible for the pension situation. The ballerina is just trying to finish the job.

Former Chicago Treasurer Miriam Santos is all smiles as she gets in the car with her family after picking her up at the Pekin Federal Prison Camp Wednesday on Jan. 19, 2000. Santos, the city's first Hispanic woman to hold a citywide elective office, was convicted in September 1999 on five counts of mail fraud and attempted extortion charges for using her office to benefit the campaigns of local Democrats. But a federal appeals court reversed her conviction, ruling that it was marred by an "avalanche of errors." Her case was remanded to the district court for retrial, where she pleaded guilty in October 2000 to one count of mail fraud for misusing city employees for campaigning. (from the Trib)

I agree! I am a forensic accountant; not from Chicago - I don't see anyway around it... the numbers are too big... it will take way more than a property tax increase; amoung other fees and increases... they don't want to do it because of all the corruption that would come to light - but I say this: it will give the city a clean start and will do some good.. like it or not - this is what your pols have done to you..

The numbers are too big ? Let's start by reassessing the downtown area. You know, the Sears Tower and other big buildings. I've read several articles that show that similar buildings in NYC, pay twice as much in real estate taxes. Shared sacrifice ? Let's start with those guys.

The difference between Detroit collapsing on itself and Chicago is that Chicago has a tax base and Detroit's had failed.

When the single industry (autos)in Detroit tanked, the workforce bailed out, leaving empty homes and vacant lots and no one to pay taxes on worthless property.

Chicago has valuable real estate and occupants who can't or won't go anywhere, and a pool of ready buyers who will purchase the real estate that's being sold. Taxes WILL go up, but Chicago has loads of viable property and business to tax. Chicago isn't the one-trick pony Detroit was.

The only way Chicago could fail is if the DICTATOR at City Hall is not curtailed by the City Council and the State in his criminal, spendthrift actions.

From your headline - Why are these guys "punk" reporters? Seems like they got it right. They DID the right thing when damn few others did.

They're punks? They tried to speak out supporting a renegade who had evidence against the people who screwed you royally. Punks, really?

Not a whole lot different than Tim Novak and Chris Fusco who kept on the Vanecko case. The cops involved in that mess were Daley operatives, NOT your friends. And SSC has repeatedly shagged Navak and Fusco.

Maybe some day you'll figure it out. The enemy of my enemy, might be my friend. (And let's be clear here, Daley operatives / unclean cops are your enemy too.)

We';re going to assume for hte sake of argument that (A) you aren't a cop and (B) you don't own a Thesaurus. Otherwise, we have to assume that you're completely without a sense of humor, irony and the intelligence god gave a chicken.

"Punk" is a young, snot-nosed troublemaker. No one can argue that 24 years ago Kass and Pearson weren't younger. We imagine that growing up and the City Desk and learning their trade from the crusty old-timers, they weren't teased mercilessly as cigar-chomping old men pretended to wipe their noses chasing down a good story. And if you don't think a story supporting Santos caused all sorts of trouble among the Daley disciples at the time......

It was a compliment there Brainiac, and a nod to the old timers who taught us a lot of stuff about policing.

They targeted her to dirty her up during her election campaign. She was set up by Mike Madigan, who advised her who to pressure and how to do it. And miraculously, exactly that phone call was recorded on a wiretap. You know, stand-up guy, no ulterior motives Mike? Him.

By discrediting her, they were able to wrest control of the very funds she was desperately trying to protect.
