ET Cross Training?

This would appear to be a Contract violation if true:
  • in case all you ET hopefuls aren't aware be careful what you wish for. All future promoted ETs (happening very soon) will have to sign off agreeing that they won't grieve NOT BEING PAID D3 pay for performing the work of forensic investigator. I guess several current ETs are grieving not getting their out of grade pay (sound familiar acting desk sgts?) for doing s*^t the Crime Lab guys usually do. New ETs are going to be cross trained and responsible for a ton more things. Add the new ETs to the "do more for less" category. Can you say NOT WORTH IT??? Let me know when our useless "union" gets us D2A pay for ET then maybe Ill take it. D2???? NO EFFIN' WAY
The FOP managed to lose the initial Desk Sergeant grievance. The PBPA lost the DSS grievance when the city claimed it was allowed to "redefine" the duties of sergeants and pretty much make the lieutenant a useless position. We'd bet that the city will fall back on that successful strategy of "redefining" the duties in order to pay the lower rate.

OT FOP Meeting notes
The 10.5 hr day survey results are due next week Sunday from the Department. The Lodge has been closely following the officer’s attitudes about working this schedule.  The Lodge President has stated that the 10.5 work schedule is not going to any other units.

Using your time off is still a problem in most districts. The Lodge is meeting with the Department to get around 15% of members off, not including IOD’s, Furlos or other non-discretionary time. To help we will need to standardize Watch Work Sheets across the Department. Right now only about 7% of any given watch is allowed off. At the next CompStat meeting the new time due standards will be announced

The Lodge is meeting with officers that are using the body cameras to get their input on how well the cameras are working out.

There is now a new suspension grievance procedure. The major change is that officers will not lose any time prior to having a hearing with an arbitrator. This is for suspension of ten days or less. Officers will meet with a Lodge attorney and be able to submit a three page To-From concerning the reasons why the punishment is not just.

The Lodge is watching and waiting for the Illinois State Supreme Court’s decision on the state pension benefit reform law. This will have an impact on our current and future pension benefits. The Lodge reminds us that they are in this fight to the end.

The St Jude Memorial Parade will take place on Sunday May 3rd. Step off is at 0800hrs. The IRP will be along E Solidarity Drive by Adler Planetarium.
The Lodge will hold its memorial on May 6th at 1200hrs at the Lodge Memorial Plaza.

Firearm Safety Days at the Hall are Wednesday, May 20th from 0800 to 1700hrs and Thursday, May 21st from 0800 to 1500hrs. There will be on site safety inspections and cleaning of duty related weapons at no cost. Representatives from Colt, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Springfield Arms, Sig Arms, DS Arms, Glock, Boston Leather, LMT will be there.

One officer complained about OEMC putting him on the scene of a call without informing him, more than once. He claims, he was on lunch or busy doing something else and is concerned that others might have this done to them and could be held accountable for something when he was not present. Please let the Lodge know if it happens to you.

Advise:

Sign the disclosure: "The R/O is signing under duress" . . . . then sign your name.

Let FOP argue/grieve the procedure from there.

The FOP doesn't fucking care. They are in cahoots with the mayor, especially Dean Angelo. As members, we need to ask Dean Angelo point blank is he being taken care of by city hall once he retires from his post? What is he getting for pushing the ten hour day? Are others at the FOP hall going to be taken care of by the city?

I say we need to do something so not one FOP member gets goodies from city hall once they either lose their post or retire. This is the only way we can assure that our union is working for us and not the mayor.

You don't have to like it but the department has the right to add or subtract duties to the ETs. Don't take the job if you don't want to do it. It doesn't seem right but all of our jobs can be redesigned. It is managements right.

Same thing with the FTO's. They were getting 2-3 PPOs at a time. Paid for ONE. They are grieving it.

For all you CSI fans out there being an ET is not as glamorous as you think. There are no petite blond bombshells to carry your equipment case. No you cant put a single hair upon the glass of a scanner and yell at the detective in five seconds " I got him " claiming identification of the offender because some guy walked past a crime scene before you got there.

You will however sweat your ass off in places so nasty that Steven Speilburg wouldnt write about. These places should be added to the next SAW movie and so should the occupants. You will have to remove your uniforms before entering your house because you wont know what jumped into your shirt or pants while you were collecting lifts or swabbing the roach infested refrigerators like on that Ramsey guy restaurant show.
Another perk of the job is that smell only a real wagonman could define, that smell that permiates your entire body.....yep take three showers before entering your bed.
Lets not forget ghat much of your work is done alone......alone......you will be focusing on your job as a collector of evidence that you will forget where you are and who is watching everything you do......to take your equipment....take your car....your radio ....maybe take or attack you! Most officers leave a scene once the E.T. arrives and your left to deal with the angered element. Yep you alone with a crap camera around your neck......white and black powder everywhere...people trying to get in your photo to throw up gang signs to make a photobomb .......listening for the sound of your keys dangling (so you know you still have them) your flashlight needs new batteries cause the flash on the camera wont work. All this and you still have fortyfive minutes of work at this scene left to do. Oh yeah your sgt called you and you have four jobs in que and they need you to do a favors and pick up tommys jobs cause his camera broke. All this with no chance of being an Forensic Investigator where youget paid to do the grimmy work. Good luck

Cross train all ET ,FI and Detectives . No more crime lab , assign all eats to areas and they can process crime scenes and investigate the crimes . It would be more efficient and all crime scenes would be processed better .

Time for cpd to train all new recruits to process residential burglary , recovered autos , armed robbery cases . Invest in our new police officers , a few cameras , fingerprint powder and brushes . List a section in case reports for photos and fingerprints lifted at the scene . An extra 3 weeks of training and cpd has a few hundred new et's every year .

Smaller communities do that. Also the responding officer may do the crime scene processing and some follow up. But also note they will call a regional task force for a major incident. As with any skill, i.e, crime scene processing, one gets better with practice and repetition. The skill level improves. When your freedom is on the line in a police shooting or use of force incident you want the best crime scene processing possible which is someone with a lot of experience and a high level of skill.

FOP meeting with city to allow more P.Os to use elective time is BS! Call the Union yourself and ask them, that great contract that you ratified now counts officers using elective time off to extend their furlo as part of the calculated percentage for time due, so every other week is already at capacity. This is what the union negotiated, they're not going to fight it. The screwed us again! Just like Obama care, it must be ratified to read it! That's what you get for voting yes to any contract ever! Let them all go to arbitration.

and 6 Sgt.s "supervising" with some having the nerve to take home an unmarked car?

Why can't detectives assigned to the crime scene take photos (digital) - pick up casings - on MOST of the shootings in the ghetto ( heard shots - felt pain - I ain't telling police anything ) ? Save the ET's for more involved scenes, police involved shootings or those involving little kids or heater cases ?

So with all that being said I'm frickin sick of patrol! Anyone know or rather hear any rumors about how many ET's they will make from this list? How many did they make from the last test?

You clearly can't do math.

At no time was there only 1 ET assigned to the street. 6 maybe per watch, sometimes 5 per depending on medical and furlough. But not 1. Yes there are ETs inside handling numerous evidentiary responsibilities. Photo-yes, Laser-yes and you forgot the Firearm Lab. All are necessary for case prep and evidentiary findings.

You must come from the TV generation that police work is handled by one person and everything happens in 45 min.

The Unit has asked on numerous occasions for light duty personnel to handle those responsibilities only to be told no. Those jobs must be done, so you use you're own people. There are thousands of photos to be developed, sorted and enhanced. There are many pieces of evidence to be lasered for prints and the such. If you have a suggestion on how it can be run more efficient feel free to make your suggestion to the commander or deputy. If you are a detective, feel free to let the lab know you don't want your evidence worked up. I'm sure they will oblige. Everybody has an opinion, but clearly you don't know how things work.

As far as the sgts go, there might be 2 working per shift on any given day, so yeah that's 6, but not 6 on any given watch, as you eluded to.

As far as taking a car home, I can't answer that as I don't work there anymore, but there are extenuating circumstances that would justify it. So stop making shit up because you are pissy about this or that.

4/23/2015 12:03:00 AM

I guess the one ET is complaining because he or she is the only one on the street. Well tell the 6 sgt's that you will only work one job at a time. If that doesn't work file grievances for over supervision and get a good lawyer and sue for mental stress. All due from being micro managed.

9:50am is correct
with all future police officers trained , every burglary will be processed . Detectives can absorb the few et's left and all detectives are capable of taking photo's .collecting shell casings , swab of blood etc . let's end the officers hiding in crime lab , supervisors doing nothing and one less high paying exempt spot with many inside house cats afraid of street duty .

They need to get rid of the DSS position. Make the lieutenants perform DSS functions instead of sitting in the office their whole tour watching television. Put these house mouse sergeants back on the street.

The old system worked just fine. City is just trying to save money by cutting out forensic investigators making D3 pay. Maybe someone should look into the "forensic investigators" working inside everyday instead of on the street where they are needed.

keep the sergeants as DSS , we always did the work of wc
put the lts on the street , assign them to areas and have the deputy chief rotate them around from district to district in the FIELD , job description FIELD LIEUTENANT
get rid of the coward captain inspectors an have rotating field lieutenants do the job they are being paid to do .
XO/captain = merit political position , bankrupting pensions
