Dead Heat

  • A Chicago polling firm is calling the city’s runoff campaign between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia a “dead heat.”

New numbers from Ogden and Fry show Garcia, a member of the Cook County board of commissioners, within reach of the one-term Emanuel. And the firm warned that the Hispanic population under-polls, meaning that population is underrepresented in the data.

“They’re likely dead even,” pollster Tom Swiss said Sunday night.
We're just going to come right out and cheer for Chewie. We'd rather see him founder for four years with a hostile City Council than have Rahm surgically destroy what we've paid into without fail for decades. Plus, if Rahm isn't here, Rauner is hamstrung on a lot of his big plans without his buddy. And on a national level, Chicago can make defeating Rahm a small gesture of contrition for helping screw the country with Obama.

Some cities will just have to hit bottom before they are willing to admit they have problem. And some cities like Detroit will never admit they have a problem.

How will Chicago end up?

During one of their scheduled debates, I hope Chuy throws Rahm a shot about the 1,000 "additional" cops he originally promised.

Maybe ask whether Zack's attackers would've been brought to "justice" quicker, not left to roam the streets unabated, had that extra manpower actually become a reality and not just an empty, sleight-of-digitally-challenged hand campaign promise. And from there he could segue nicely into the pension issue.

Go for it, Chewie. Don't pull punches just because the topic involves Satan's spawn. Rahm sure as fuck ain't gonna be hitting you with kid gloves.

The Ill. Democrat Machine tactic of registering at the moment you vote is about to explode in their faces! Remember this last election, Rahm had No Foot Soldiers, so there was nobody to drive voters to the polls at the last minute. Chuy on the other hand had foot soldiers and they can bring aunts, uncles and every other relative to vote without having pre-registered. This Invisible Number cannot be assessed, until they vote. Nobody even knows how many illegals are in this country, with speculation of figures ranging from 11 to 13 Million! Add to that; what City employee wants to destroy his pension by hustling for Rahm or Rauner, because now those two are a team, just like when they hang out at the $150,000 a year Wine Club!. I knew Rahm was in trouble when he had to pay people to circulate his petition to get on the ballot. In the past, City employees and their kids circulated those positions proudly proclaiming they were supporters of whomever. NOT WITH RAHM, they had to hire people. Rahm is in Real Trouble, Real Trouble, and he deserves it."G"

Thanks for clarifying your position, SCC.

I followed your advice last time around and voted against Rahm in order to force him into a run off, and give that arrogant little prick the bitch slapping he so much deserves.

I will follow your advice this time too. Not a fan of Chuy or his political positions at all, but I think having Chuy as mayor will result in a weak-mayor-strong-city-council situation, the opposite of what we have now. I think that if we can muddle thru 8 years with the Muslim-In-Chief in the White House, we can deal with Chuy for 4 years. And if Chuy is such a problem, then throw his ass out after the first term as well.

As an aside, I was amazed to see Rahm requesting and accepting an Obama endorsement. In the November 2014 elections, dozens of Democrats went to great lengths to distance themselves from Obama, and for good reason. I wonder if Rahm would change his opinion, now that Obama has been accused of giving orders to shoot down Israeli fighter jets; see http://therightscoop.com/obama-threatened-to-shoot-down-israeli-jets/

Yet Rahm actively embraces Obama. Just shows how very desperate Rahm is for the black vote.

The black community knows what going on. Rahm promised them a bill of goods. And Rahm did not deliver.

Call the next case. Not a cop.

No matter who wins I am afraid for the long term financial health of the city and our pension. I don't think Garcia has the chops to do what is necessary. Everyone is going to get gored by the coming financial meltdown. Everybody has a special interest that they want to protect and it is impossible to protect them all and bring this state and city to the level of financial health it was before the rein of daley.

from the Board of Election Commissioners, this is certain to be asked about a thousand times:

Q: Will there be Early and Absentee Voting for the April 7 runoff?

A: Yes. There will be Early Voting from March 23 through April 4. Any voters may use absentee voting (vote by mail) without any reason or excuse. The deadline to have an absentee application at the Chicago Election Board is April 2, but the Board strongly recommends voters apply for absentee ballots earlier to make sure that the voters have time to receive and return their ballots.

Rahm you lied to us with false promises of hiring a thousand new police officers. Instead you allowed the CPD to fall below the budgeted amount for front line police and detectives. Then you eliminated them from the budget to cover the shortage.

You hired an arrogant prick like your self to run the CPD. He is a liar like you are. His Comstat system is just a smoke and mirrors system of crime under reporting.

You came after our pensions by spending wildly on pet projects and allowing our bond rating to drop while the Tiff money goes unreported. Billions of tax dollars not counted. This is criminal.

Burge went to jail for lying to the feds. You do not deserve to be mayor of Chicago. You sir are a liar. You deserve to go.

You closed CPS schools and sent thousands of poor, under served students to find another place to go. You opened more Charter schools. Students do not do any better there then CPS schools. But someone, like Rauner is making money off these now displaced students. You deserve to go.

The 1% keep trying ...

On Friday, only three days after Tuesday’s election, Becky Carroll, CEO of Chicago Forward, the pro-Emanuel independent expenditure committee, took a step that would bust the contribution caps for the Chicago mayor race.

That afternoon she notified the Illinois Board of Elections that her group would put $110,000 towards pro-Rahm Emanuel political communications, forcing the Board of Elections to lift contribution limits for the mayoral runoff. That same day, Chicago Forward reported two separate $100,000 contributions from husband and wife Michael J. and Cari Sacks.

As hard as it may be we all have to vote for Garcia. The fact is we will never have a good mayor. NEVER! But Rahm is scary and will not do what is right with the pension. The pension is the ONLY issue we should care about. It was an agreement written in stone and we have paid into it every two weeks just like we agreed to when we signed the papers on our first day of employment in the Police academy. The city has spent BIG BIG money on everything else, but the pension. The city has the money. The bill is due NOW! I do not trust Rahm.

What if his intention is to only stay one more term and then do something else? So if he wins could he screw us big time on the way out? Don't doubt that he wouldn't. That's a very scary thought. SCC, you're 2/3's right. We need less Rahm, less Obama, but more Rauner. Like the guy or not, right now he represents the only hope of lifting Illinois out of the mess it's in. And like the situation or not, a guy like him represents the only hope of fixing Chicago's economic time bomb.

Everybody wants a cure that's not going to hurt, and that isn't going to happen. Rahm is a shithead, and Chuy is in over his head. The best Chicago can hope for in this election is to get rid of the shithead and let Chuy flounder for 4 years. Maybe by then a real candidate will emerge who'll hopefully will be able to begin following Rauner's example.

The Chicago Mayoral contest is a tragic emblem of our civic failure. Rahm inherited a disaster. The Daley Machine stole everything that was not nailed down, promised rich pensions without raising taxes, borrowed as much as could be borrowed in the taxpayers name and sold as many city assets as could be sold.

A true Mayoral leader might have been able to call for shared sacrifice; cut pensions, raise taxes, lower civil servants pay and cut entitlements and other spending.

The problem is, nobody wanted to hear the truth and make shared sacrifices, AND Rahm was a conniving abrasive asshole.

He should not have tried to lengthen the school day, while undermining CPS finances by pushing Charter Schools like UNO and Noble Street to provide graft for the likes of Juan Rangel and Rauner's buddies. It was this drain from CPS of students to Charters that made it imperative to close schools. All these things pissed off the teachers and south side blacks. He needed to propose a deal that included no pay increases in exchange for additional payments to the CTU pension plan. Instead CTU got a pay raise that CPS could not afford.

At the same time, CPD and CFD negotiated to impasse, and arbitrators awarded contracts that the city cannot afford given underfunded pensions.

Meanwhile Chicagoans want plenty of city services and free social services and entitlements, and they dont want to pay taxes for everything.

So Chicago will get bankruptcy. It does not really matter if Chuy or Rham gets in: an emergency manager will be making all the decisions in Chicago within three years. That is the tragedy.

Rahm and his slick lawyers are making legal arguments that smacks of larceny in a full court press effort to steal and diminish pension money promised to retired senior citizen civilian employees.

Rahm will always be rich and so will his friends. Garcia isn't even close to Rahm in wealth. Garcia has the city council to deal with and he has spoken often about hiring. I also doubt he will have a cozy relationship with the Gov. VOTE GARCIA because it's about the pension.

Do we really want a weak mayor, strong city council. Have you really looked at the make up of the city council?

3/02/2015 12:26:00 PM

Yes I have, and on balance, I do feel a weak mayor, strong city council would be better and here's why.

Under Rahm, we had the opposite. What ever Rahm wanted, he yes-men approved.

Case in point: the $100MIL DePaul stadium. Now, DePaul is a fine school. If they want a stadium, no problem. Just let THEM come up with the $100MIL. To use taxpayer money for this is frivolity. But to do so at at time when the City is on the edge of insolvency is sheer lunacy.

Case in point: Rahm cries that the City is broke and has no money to make the upcoming pension payment. Yet billions are sloshing around in the TIF funds. And the City Council just goes along and thinks this is all OK.

Yes, the City Council is like a box of mixed nuts - and that's a good thing because it would make it that much harder to reach a broad consensus on ANYTHING. Result: a lot fewer bad ideas will get implemented.

And kudos to the prior poster who pointed out that Rahm, if re-elected, may very well screw everyone on their pensions and not care what it would do to his chances for re-election, because Rahm would not be seeking re-election, at least not as mayor of Chicago. An excellent point.

Chuy's political views make me puke, but I am going to hold my nose and vote for him anyway. Like I said, if 4 years from now we look back and don't like what Chuy did, then we can throw his ass out as well.

Call the next case. Not a cop.

3/02/2015 02:41:00 PM

I'm concerned with more than my pension. I have investment property in the city and I need to stay here for family reasons.

As for Rahm being the only one who can save us, though, c'mon. First, he hasn't done anything to stop the downward slide in the four years he's had the job. Second, he spends money like it's water, and not his water, at that.

Chicago's mayor, whoever it is, needs to STOP SPENDING MONEY THAT CHICAGO DOESN'T HAVE. That is the thing that will keep us from becoming Detroit.

Somehow, I think Chuy Garcia can manage to grasp that simple idea and run with it. Rahm Emanuel sure as hell can't.

Because Emanuel, with no financial training or education, earning sixteen million in two years in a job handed to him by Bill Clinton's cronies, was all LEGIT, right? First inkling of a family problem, he has his superintendent of police cover his son's case up. Declares crime numbers down when we all know they're rocketing. Diverts TIF money to projects prohibited by law. Yes, he's a boy scout.

You really want us to believe he's a straight-up, honorable, guy? Welcome to the Emerald City and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Why do you think Chewie would face an uncooperative City Council? I disagree - look at who won and the run-offs. I think that it would be a sympathetic Council.

3/02/2015 09:57:00 AM
Helping those candidates was a quid pro quo move. Tiny Dancer has fucked over almost every alderman beginning with threatening a few who considering running against him. I won't get into details, but trust me he is a vile despicable excuse for a human being.

Ongoing threats to get majority votes may not be so it's obvious to us, but he threatens them in ways only seen in the glory days of the Mob. You think Waguespak's ward is the first shoveled or the last? But, hey, it's the grid system. Why is the 2nd ward such a fucked up mess far from where the incumbent lived? Bye, bye Bob.

The city council is chomping at the bit to actually be independent from the mayor I have no doubt we'll see a winning vote on a city-run casino with all proceeds going to pension plans until they are funded to the requirements. We may even see Geo Lucas and his Star Wars Museum get launched to a galaxy far far away.

Many people are voting out of hate which is crazy.I suggest listening to the debates and see who has the answers.Mr Garcia was asked how he would pay for a 1000 more police. His answer was "oh we'll find the money".If you take down all the red light cameras how do you replace that revenue? We shouldn't vote out of hate or race.Granted not everything is perfect, but do we really know everything about Garcia and his policies.I'll listen to the debates and then make my decision. We are all 21 plus vote smart !

Chuy will fight for and fund city employee pensions . A good start would be , collect the millions owed in water bills from south suburbs , deduct breakfast and lunch from link cards , reduce number of police officers on politicians bodyguard details .

3/02/2015 04:51:00 PM

As much as we talk about everybody else, cops sure talk about stuff they have no idea of. Link card dollars are fed money, not even state money. The state pays for the administration of the program. The actual money on the card for food is 100% fed dollars. Good luck getting a city mayor to manage a fed program.

You are dreaming. Have you seen the make up of the city council. Do you really want them making the decisions. Be careful what you ask for. What makes you think an independent city council would vote for our pensions being funded by a casino? Also any casino in Chicago has to be approved by the state, not the city council. Rahm put in legislation before and Quinn didnt sign it.

It is amazing how some of the Pro-Rahm people are attempting to stick up and make excuses for him. Under his GREAT leadership the shootings and homicides have skyrocketed, the city's bond rating is plummeting and the TIF program money is hidden from us.
Under his leadership, Chicago public schools are closed with him out of the country, while his crony friends are allowed to open Charter schools that siphon millions to under performing schools. Under his leadership the red-light camera program has expanded and he placed the majority of them in our neighborhoods to pay for the tax breaks he gives his millionaire friends.
He's failed to live up to his promise on fixing the pensions, hiring police, fixing the infrastructure and making the city a safer and better place. He has done on thing correct, and that's giving himself and 1% more money and kickbacks.
All Rahm has done during his tenure is hurt the working people of this great city, ignore the lies that scumbags like Luis Gutierrez and the rest of these professional politicians have spewed!
If you really can read the tea leaves, see the lies and want change, vote Rahm Emmanuel out on April 7, 2015. Go Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.

Well, Rahm's already gone on the record saying he won't fund our pension until there is pension 'reform'. He is also maneuvering to put off making the lump sum payment in nine months, which cripples our fund and doesn't let it make enough interest income to sustain itself.

But, you go ahead and vote for him.

Well guess what, the Demo-Communists do not want anyone checked for citizenship when applying for a lot of things like a D/L. If you can come up with a few documents, paystubs, utility bills a wink and a nod and off you go voter registration included.

The same with the dead. If Aunt Minnie died out of state or just not reported officially the prescient captain might keep her "alive" for years.

Being a live U.S. citizen may be the law but in reality...

So who's the "dumbass".

If Rahm loses, what are the odds that Chicago will follow Detroit into bankruptcy and there goes all of those pensions down the tubes. The only alternative if the attempt to amend the pensions plans fails in the courts is to up property taxes to the point that people start leaving or vote out everyone and then the next administration can easily file for bankruptcy. I don't like Rahm much but be careful what you wish for unless you see a real alternative to dealing with the fiscal mess that the city is in.
