Seriously? Wine?

What, you can't afford Binny's so you shoplift as Costco?
  • Shoplifting has escalated in the city, and the Chicago Police Department’s organized crime division is part of a task force trying to stop it.

But now the 2 Investigators have learned one of their own officers was charged with shoplifting after an alert store security guard and cameras caught the cop in the act.

According to police reports, on Oct. 18, Costco security saw a customer at its store at 1430 S. Ashland Ave. take a bottle of wine off the shelf and place it in her shopping cart. She then moved to the back of the store, where security saw her place the bottle in her purse.
Not just one bottle of wine - but five. And then attempted to flee the scene following a confrontation. Great job there lady, way to tarnish the star.

What she did is wrong and she should be punished according to policy. That said, how many of you are veterans? How many were overseas and saw action? Does she suffer from PTSD? Was or is she an Alcoholic prior to being assigned to the unit? Was her supervisor aware of her issues and were attempts made to have these issues addressed? I'm not placing blame, the fault is on her. My point is that we are brothers and sisters on this job and it seems as though we get more satisfaction from watching each other screw up than we do with helping them. I know everyone has a sad story. In this country we give every piece of dirt a second chance whether they deserve it or not. Our veterans have been treated like crap since at least he beginning of Vietnam. I don't know this woman or her story but I've worked with other officers who suffer serious PTSD. It can be immobilizing. I've seen grown men roll into a ball when shots were fired, I've watched them stop being functioning police offers as they were overcome by some thought that took them back to being overseas. Before we all judge our own please at least try to give them the benefit of the doubt until all the facts are revealed. Sorry that's my Kum Ba Ya moment for the season. Just remember life is hard enough when you already know that most people all ready hate you. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all my brothers and sisters. Please stay safe. TC

Stealing wine is not half as bad as stealing thousands of dollars in paychecks in taxpayer money and time due from your fellow officers. At least she got caught- that's more than I can say for all the medical and IOD abusers who never do. It would be nice if they caught the drunken clouted mess who has been on the medical for half the year with a bump on her wrist. Never had surgery, supposedly can't work (guess signing the park logs on 05 is too much for her), but she can go drinking and partying in Mexico and out of state. It would also be nice if they caught the other thief who has been IOD for 6 mos. from tripping in a pothole. She pulls this bs every year and has the procedure down to a science. Best of all, they don't even try to hide their scams- they post all of their excursions all over Facebook! Unfking real.

As we all know there are people in all walks of life from doctors, past president, down to people who wear our uniform that have drinking problems (alcoholism) and can't stop. In this case I believe the officer is so hooked on the booze that they don't know how to stop and took the wine out of a addiction problem. This is the holiday season and we need officers to know the department will bend over backwards to help officers recover from alcoholism. The only catch is that you have to ask for help from the EAP before you do a criminal act like this or drinking and driving. Maybe this example will help another officer get the help they need before it's too late and they do an act to embarrass the badge. There is no shame in getting help before you mess up. Whatever the outcome I hope the department helps this officer with the drinking problem before they seek to fire her.

I do not now this officer but have seen other cases like this. What this may be is a VIRTUAL SUISIDE. A precursor event leading up to the ultimate tragedy. Anyone who knows her, family friends, co-workers and bosses should look for other signs, like giving prized possessions away, mood swings, telling everyone that everything is all right when it is obvious things are not. They should get her the help she needs.

Stay Safe, watch for other cases like this we lose too many cops because people miss the signs or were afraid to act.

From: 12/17/2014 01:18:00 PM What I wrote was not based on watching after "after school specials" but from a CPD career of 36 years that included a few promotions none of them meritorious. I have known officers who have committed suicide and talked to many officers and got them the help they needed during times of stress and maybe prevented tragedy. I talked to officers who had friends who committed suicide and put together the signs. "Joe was upset after he broke up with his old lady but said everything was fine and gave me his new Beretta."

I said I do not know this officer but this case sounds like others I have known over the years. I hope that things work out in her life.

When you work (and I mean work, not hide)public safety in Shitcago for a lifetime, the demons in your head are going to come out from that closet at sometime, maybe tomorrow, maybe 20 years from now, its just a matter how they manifest and how you deal with them.

For all you tough guy saltys out there demanding her head, God help you when your demons come, I am sure you would like that lifeline too then.

Bite me asshat. There is nothing lower than a thief. Her trust has been tested and she has failed miserably. No one is saying execute her , but let her find another career.
AND, do tell, what does "decorated" mean these days, when it comes to military (or for that matter police) recognition? We all know many hacks and useless cowards who were a chest full of ribbons. Decorations and commendations have no meaning any more, so save it.

Absolutely agree! Great post.
PTSD or other psych issues are a very real possibility here.
And anybody who thinks those things are fakery or 'liberal nonsense' is a science-denying fool. They should sign up with Tom Cruise crowd next time their kids get really sick -- see how that works out.
It's too bad that there are some obvious fakers out there. They rip off the real people in need of help.
Maybe this woman is one of them. Maybe not.
But the blood-lust presented here, on the weight of the evidence we have, is just mean....and stupid.
Good luck to you when somebody you love shows up with postpartum depression or anorexia or debilitating agoraphobia or schizophrenia. Good luck with that tuff-guy ignorance.
Maybe you'll come back afterwards with a little more humility.

She won't be fired. I've seen a cop on this job try to have his wife killed and he's still working. Another copper couldn't handle his liquor at a suburban bar and got tasered by suburban coppers and is now working tact. This job is joke when it comes to firing bad cops.

You blame the news for this incident. I blame society; society does not want us to be the real police anymore. The bleeding heart liberals are going to get what they want, no policing. Let us be the real police and watch crime go down. So what if one officer is wrongly accused of shoplifting. What about all the other people who shoplift and never make the news? Let us be the real police!

Poster #2...read #1 above.
I'm no bleeding heart. Not by a long shot.
Let YOU be the real police? Like you get to decide? That is exactly the problem. It's been the problem for decades. It's a big part of why the job is so hard now.
What people want is EFFECTIVE policing. Effective management. Effective community relations. Effective policies. Effective disciplinary measures.
Not an occupation force staffed, all too often, by a bunch of over-privileged, immune-from-criticism, badass wannabees who think that they make up the law and they get to enforce it however / whenever / wherever THEY choose.
It'd be great if we'd just to return to the good 'ole days of Burge and Abbate and Szura and Doyle and and and. Great? Not on your life.
There are a lot of terrific cops out there. No doubt.
But not as many as there should be. And not by a long shot. The Daleys saw to that. That stain still runs long and deep. Just ask David Koschman's mom, eh?
Great policing. You bet. Sign me up.
Above-the-law goon squad? No way.

Would Pam Zekman give this case any thought or air at all if this did not involve a P.O..

God forbid she does any real reporting a like phony crime stats or theft of our pensions.

New hairdo or not she still looks like a troll.

What, she can't find a liquor store that still gives 20% off? I know one but damned if I am going to ruin it by spreading it around.

What happened to the nutty female alternative lifestyle PO who got arrested for lifting a bottle of orange juice from Starbucks at Belmont & Leavitt?

she is a decorated war veteran.
(U.S. ARMY from Iraq and Afghanistan)

It is VERY obvious that she has some VERY serious personal issues.

A good conduct medal and theater ribbon is not decorated. You need the Bronze or Silver Star and CIB to qualify as decorated.

Hey ding-dong
IF she's in her right mind, then she ought to get bounced. Now.
But IF she's got 'issues' (maybe due to service, maybe something else, maybe not) just MAYBE they're no fault of her own.
And the fact is that you damn well don't know.

MAYBE she's got a brain chemistry problem - sort of like cancer...something that just happens and wrecks your life.
We don't fire people for that. "Just let 'em find another career" 'cause they got cancer. Nice call there pal.
Cut out the tuff guy crap. It's just stooopid.

I hate crooked cops. I wrote the comment above about Burge and Abbate et al. But nobody here has near enough information to make that call in the case of this woman. Least of all you.

I'm sure she will beat it. Dan Dahill gets popped stealing chips/milk from a west side convenient store and fought and got his job back. All public record SSC so you can publish this one!
