No One Goes to Jail?

You gotta love Chicago - just cut a check:
  • The dead have voted in Chicago. Now, they’ve also signed papers swearing their kids were eligible for financial aid to attend one of the City Colleges of Chicago, documents obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times show.

A dispute over whether students at Kennedy-King College got more financial aid than they were entitled to has been settled with the City Colleges repaying the federal government nearly $4.3 million, the records show.

The settlement stems from a 2009 federal Department of Education review of Kennedy-King’s financial-aid program. The agency said the City Colleges school at 63rd and Halsted needed to do more to show that students who got federal financial aid to go there between 2007 and 2009 qualified for all the aid they received.

By 2011, things had gotten testier. The federal agency declared Kennedy-King had “failed to address” the earlier findings and demanded it repay $10.3 million in financial aid it said the school had “improperly disbursed” to students.
So the Department of Education wants $10.3 million back, Chicago cuts a check for $4.3 and calls it even. How about investigating where the money went? Push a little harder on finding out who forged the names of dead people? The suspect list is confined to one office - no one can get fingered?

The federal government was probably in on this -- just another wealth redistribution scheme.

Only this time, someone at the Sun-Times was actually doing their job and they got caught.

Some south side politicians' names may come up if they look a little further.

Not to worry, it's not like it is real money up in smoke. It's only taxpayer dollars.

    No no no!
    Don't look HERE!

Look at the sweet pensions and early retirements those cops get!

    Pay no attention to this!

Somebody might put two & two together and find out that billions if not trillions of dollars have been pissed away in similar fashion on educational entitlements over the years.

This is nothing new for the City Colleges, which have been used as a patronage pit for aldermanic relatives and friends of Emil Jones, Sr., for years. A similar scam operated years ago at Malcolm X College where the students and some crooked faculty members cooperated in defrauding the Federal government: students registered for classes that they did not attend while pocketing financial aid money; the dishonest instructors issued passing "grades" for students who never attended class in return for bribes. Everything was cruising along smoothly until the Feds caught on.

Oh yes, one of the deadbeat administrators involved was spared discipline and promoted beyond his level of competence repeatedly at the City Colleges.
The clown is now looting Chicago State University.

After reading the article yesterday I felt the same way. Its easy not to care or do a real investigation when the money lost isnt yours and its loss wont affect you. I wish their was someone who had the time and ability that could break down by dollar per household what each one of these blunders costs. Then total it at the end of the year showing which politicians had their hands in the pot. I think this could straighten out some of the city and states problems. Or not.

Money not always going to dead people. but people who register for class and rarely or never show up but are carried as students. Under the aid packages, tuition and fees and books are paid and in some circumstances the students are actually paid a sum to be in attendance. I taught at Chicago State for years and the entire program was laughable. If you tooki attendance and graded with any integrity at all, the word got around on you and no one wanted to register for your class. There were days that entire classrooms were empty as professors dismissed early as a routine measure. I often wondered if the administration was engaged in grade changing?

"The clown" at Chicago State University is Wayne Watson. He just announced the hiring of a new provost, Angela Henderson, the wife of Watson's personal attorney, Victor Henderson, who represented disgraced former State Representative Derrick Smith, who was expelled from the Illinois General Assembly for soliciting a bribe. Angela Henderson spent months trying to do damage control after various reports surfaced that she had plagiarized her doctoral dissertation. One of the worthies on her dissertation panel was, wait for Watson, who has no background in the subject area of Ms. Henderson's degree (Nursing).
The Feds have also been poring over financial aid records at Chicago State University. CSU may be closed before you finish reading this paragraph. Oh, yes, Watson was the former president of Kennedy-King. Everything that he touches turns to manure, but he has one of the richest pensions in Illinois.
