Gerry, Shut the Hell Up

  • I worked for the Chicago Police Department for 20 years, retiring last December. It’s a shame the way the David Koschman case has been investigated. The reason that the officers and state’s attorneys involved in the case were not disciplined was CLOUT! You basically can do what you want as long as you have a sponsor. The officers who don’t are the ones held to a higher standard.

The police department and the city of Chicago was corrupt when my grandfather came on in the 1940s and was worse when my father came on in the 1960s. I experienced the same graft and cover-ups during my career.

This department should be sanctioned by the federal government just like the Detroit police department has.

    Gerry Callahan,
    Edison Park
Really Gerry? Who was your "sponsor?" Your wife kept you out of so much trouble we can barely begin to describe the stink of clout that pervaded your entire career. You should have been fired for your antics any number of times, but phone calls were made, reports were ignored, investigations quashed. Here's some highlights of your illustrious arrest record - we understand if you can't remember most of it, seeing as how you were blind fucking drunk:
  • A Chicago police officer who is alleged to have beaten up a couple at a Niles bar this weekend has a history of threatening violence and abusing alcohol, court and police records show.

Chicago police officials tried to fire Officer Gerald Callahan for cursing and lunging at supervisors and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test after other officers reported smelling alcohol on his breath at work in March 2006. But last January, the Police Board voted 5-3 to suspend him for two years. Callahan returned to work in February because he had been suspended since the incident

Callahan, 42, the son and grandson of former Chicago police officers, was cleared of another incident in 2004 when he was accused of threatening other officers in a locker room.

But he served a 30-day suspension in early 2006 for being intoxicated while off duty in January 2004. In that incident, Callahan arrested a bartender who refused to serve him more drinks. The bartender sued and settled with the city for $15,000.

On Saturday, Callahan was arrested a block from the Chambers Seafood Grille and Chop House in Niles on two misdemeanor battery counts for punching a 61-year-old Morton Grove man and a 50-year-old Niles woman. Over the weekend, Callahan said he was bitten by a police dog and mistreated by authorities, but Niles police disputed his claims.
This is who the Sun Times publishes to critique the department - a notoriously clout-heavy drunk who cost the city thousands of dollars in lawsuits and untold embarrassment every time he ended up in jail, yet thinks the Department needs oversight because people exactly like him get away with things that would get the unclouted canned in a heartbeat. We don't know which is the bigger joke - Callahan or the Slum Times.

Hey Callahan, you were a complete goof when you were a PPO in 019....and you only got worse from there. You were and still are an embarrassment to this department and you give every hard working guy and girl on this job a bad name with your bs antics. You are the last person to comment on anything to do with clout, discipline or how disgraceful something was handled. You shouldn't have ever been hired, and most certainly, should have been fired. Go fuck yourself.

Aye...

By all that is every place including Ireland, everybody is dumber for having read that nonsense.

The scum-times editors should be beaten with gnarly tree branches...

Callahan was yet another drunken entitled/clouted, piss in the kitchen sink jag-goof who had no business being on the job.

The editors KNEW/remembered all about Callahan and his antics and posted his letter anyway instead of doing the right thing and flushing it.

What a total fucking jagoff.

Gerry says: "I experienced the same graft and cover-ups during my career."

No, you punkass bitch, you participated in the cover-ups that allowed you to slip through the cracks umpteen times. You had the old lady use her connections at the law firm and ward office to bail your ass out of many a jam.

But your pathetic, drunken ass went to the well one too many times and - thankfully - you finally gave them enough rope to hang yourself once and for all.

For those of you that don't know, Gerry still frequents the bars in and around Edison Park and the surrounding 'burbs; it's only a matter of time before he's involved in another alcohol-fueled incident, whether it's a motor vehicle accident, battery, what-have-you. I urge any copper that has the unfortunate luck to happen upon or be assigned anything where he's involved to hammer his ass mercilessly.

"We don't know which is the bigger joke - Callahan or the Slum Times."

That's easy, SCC. This one's a tie race, with both being immediately disqualified for not being anything near credible or worth our time.

Anyway, did ya hear the one about the three 'retired' CPD officers? Soooo, Gerry Callahan, Sean Dailey and Tony Abbate walk into a bar...

What a piece of shit...and he has the nerve to write in to the Sun-Times and blast the clout system that has just about brought the City, along with the CPD to its knees? the only thing worse than Callahan's blatant hypocrisy is the fact that he very likely carries around a 'retired' star and id, indicating that he retired in good standing, when nothing could be further from the truth.

It was an "Irish Thing" that most of us would not understand. I cannot believe that this POS had the nerve to write a letter to the Editor. If anyone investigates CPD they could start by asking how someone like this could remain on the job so long and not get fired. And there are others. This is why the opening of the records on past behavior are a pot of gold to attorneys. And the irony is that Callahan was a Do Nothing even by Mass Transit standards, and how do you think he got to that Unit? And he was just a Patrolman.

Wanna be taken seriously? Resign in mid-career when you first realize you're in the wrong job. Show some balls and give up all your benefits to become a whistleblower and champion of the people. Then maybe I'll listen.

I don't know this guy, but some of what he says rings of truth. I came on the job in the late 60's and most people needed some hook to even get the job. Promotions and assignments were influenced as well as internal investigations. People with clout were let out of the station with no charges. ETC. ETC. And, I saw this activity until the day I retired 36 years later. Is it ever going to change? The news media ignored what was going on internally in the police department while going after patronage hiring in other city departments. But, in reality of one city department was corrupted you can be damn sure all of them were, to include the police department.

In 019 we had a guy with over 100 brutality complaints. Some of them lodged by his fellow police officers. He had suspension time measured in years. He told a commander to his face "what the fuck are you going to do, you can't do anything to me."

Department tried to fire him. He was good as gone. Police Board said no. Police Department refused to put him back to work. It took a couple of years to work it's way through the courts. He won and made it back to work in another district. When there were openings in 019 he bid back.

He was made whole, years of V-Days, P-Days, BFD-Days, back pay etc. He worked a couple of years more and retired in good standing.

Never in his career was he ever thought of as a good police officer. He was a blow hard fat useless hunk of shit. A fat slob school yard bully with a badge and a gun. He liked to stand at the desk and tell war stories. He was worse than useless.

At the end of his career he couldn't walk up the stairs from the locker room to the 1st floor. He must have been 350 pounds.

And a good policeman like Bill Cozzi goes to federal prison. Don't ever thing there is justice in this world. Or on this police department.

If things are so bad for you, LEAVE! Oh yeah! Guess things aren't so bad after all!

Look, crybaby, grow up. The world is the same everywhere you go. The military, private enterprise, federal, state and local government work. People with connections often have it easier.

Often, I said, not always.

Go get an advanced degree, work hard, keep your nose clean, do your job, and guess what? Doors will open for you, too.

Stop whining about your absence of clout and make something of yourself.

SCC is a good example: For whatever reason, one (or more) person(s) has created this blog. They get no money, and no fame, so why do they do it?

I have a sneaking suspicion they do it to make their little corner of the world a better place.

Whoever does all this work (and believe me, a blog like this is a tremendous commitment) has developed a world-class writer's talent, and will some day move on to greater things. In the meantime they have enriched lives (including yours) and created one of the world's most successful blogs.

One day SCC will be revealed, probably when they sign a multimillion-dollar book deal. And they deserve it.

So to you, whiner, I say, try to emulate those who are determined to succeed. Stop with the excuses. Go get your own slice of the pie. It takes hard work, but every day, all around you, people are doing it. You can do it, too.

This idiot Callahan complaining about clout on the CPD is about as relevant as Hitler complaining about those damn Nazis.

What he is really trying to say is fuck his former clout, it wasn't good enough to keep him on the job after that last galactically stupid fuck-up.

If it had been, God Bless clout. All would be good in the world. Until the next drunken screw up.

Here's hoping Gerry goes out there and after a night of swilling booze does something really stupid and lands in IDOC. Then we can all send him birthday cards in the joint. Like "Happy Birthday asshole, your wife is fucking someone else and the kids call someone else Daddy."

Well, one can hope for good things, at least. Someone wins the lottery, you know. That guy needs to be spanked real hard.

THE NUCLEAR OPTION: WHEN OFFICER SAFETY IS JOB NO. 1, CITIZENS DIE

Defending yet another police shooting of an American citizen, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson last week casually made a stunning admission — one that fell largely on deaf ears among the twisted media, race pimps and merchants of racial discord gathered in Ferguson.

"I think officer safety is the number one issue," Chief Dotson explained to reporters after two of his officers reportedly fired nine rounds into an accused shoplifter who was apparently armed with a knife.

Such a statement may sound perfectly reasonable in the upside down world where allegiance to your labor union trumps allegiance to the public or allegiance to your employer.

But step back and consider: Is a police officer's number one job really to protect himself and his partner? Really?

Bottom line.........the Better Government Association website has a pension data base for government employee pensions and he ain't on it. It does reflect the fact that his father who served for over forty years is collecting a Police pension. Since he lied about the fact that he is "retired", everything else he says must be viewed in the same light. It's too bad that the Sun-Times didn't do their due diligence and Google this guy before they printed his letter. That failure, makes all of their investigative reporting seem a bit suspect.

I never listen to any of these assholes:

1) former cops who, after a long career, retire with full benefits to say that their department had been corrupt all along;

2) former drug cops who, after a long career, retire with full benefits to say that the "war on drugs" is a disgrace and that drugs should be legalized.

Wanna be taken seriously? Resign in mid-career when you first realize you're in the wrong job. Show some balls and give up all your benefits to become a whistleblower and champion of the people. Then maybe I'll listen.

Gerry is not collecting a pension. Ploce Board Case 12PB2822 filed on 25Sep12 recommending discharge. There is no Callahan that retired in 2012 collecting a pension. Case closed.

He claims he is retired. If he is he retired he has some real heavy clout. He should have been fired by the police board.

9/01/2014 02:19:00 AM

You must be talking about fat ass Kevin m. What a psyche case he was. Chased a Lt around the desk, used to wait for guys after work to confront them because he thought they were talking about him. Totally nuts, shot up a citizens car, beat a fellow cop senseless and other bad shit yet they couldn't fire him. Watch Commander in 019 was told by psych doctor that he was a danger to both the citizens and other cops but he was too smart to fail a psyche test. Glad he's gone and no one ever was hurt by his actions.

The last time around the department's shrink found him unfit for duty. He had the right to a second opinion so he hired his own shrink and that doctor also found him unfit for duty.

When he was on the transfer order back to 019 people who had problems with him were worried. A couple were prepared to shoot him this time, if necessary. With his history of threatening to kill fellow cops it was thought he could easily be shot and the claim of self defense wouldn't be questioned. Just pull out his file. Thank God he is gone now. One thing he had going with a Lt., he threatened to blow up the Lt's house and to kill a sergeant. Suspension time is all he got for both.

Don't trash it. A Master's from any accredited institution (like Calumet) takes work. People who have one appreciate its value. Others, like you, slump on bar stools, giggling stupidly in your beer.

All you guys do is complain. If you have no clout, then get clout. This job gives you plenty of opportunities. I have no clout. I took the initiative to sign up at Calumet College. Through hard work, I earned a Masters degree. Now, I am at the academy working as an instructor. My hard work and dedication is getting recognized by the department. Learn to do something for yourselves.

Calumet College Masters Degree = GED. It might be time for a new set of knee pads.

While working Mass Transit years ago I witnessed Gerry Callahan help about a dozen old ladies across the street. Often saw him pass out candy to little poor kids. He was always a polite gentleman who always had kind words for his fellow officers. If anyone has a dispute with those facts please call me at the Indiana Correctional Facility for the Criminally Insane. My name is Hannibal Lechter. Peace Out!

Gerry onced MF'ed street deputy McNulty who was trying to help him in one of his drunken episodes in Edison Park. (Those of you who remember McNulty know what a great guy he was when an officer was in a questionable situation). Gerry was a bully. Once beat up a homeless guy in Portage Park because he didnt really think Gerry was the police (that would be a common misunderstanding if you saw the way he acted). However, when confronted by a fellow officer because Gerry was talking crap about him, Gerry backed down like a little bitch. Drunk, Bully, Bad Cop, the list of names and tags can go on forever. He got exactly what he deserved in the end. Many good supervisors tried to help him over the years and all he did was continue to f up. Good riddance Gerry.

""""You must be talking about fat ass Kevin m. Glad he's gone and no one ever was hurt by his actions."""""

I remember him coming back from a 6 monther and with less then 10 mins back on the streets from the suspension he was bitch slapping a gang banger 1/4th his size down the street.

KM was amusing but he was not the sharpest pin on the board.

My two cents
Been on the job for 12yrs. I know that for the 20-30 yr old dinosaurs on this job I'm just over the initial hump, but I do have to agree with Gerry because this job is all about who you know. This is a very good job hands down to the clouted, but for those that don't have it, your humping it 24/7. Of course coming from the mouth of some nincompoop copper who made headlines like that, nobody is going to pay attention but the truth of the matter is that the clouted are always going to be saved by the powers to be while the not connected are going to be thrown to the lions every time. So don't take us coppers that are not connected for fools, by lashing out at this {Gerry guy} the man does tell the truth for every other non-clouted cop out there doing the same performance type work as these so called super clouted cops out there.

No clout speaking here but I must say you're a skid mark on my underpants. 12 years on the job? Don't like the existence of clout on the job, then quit and go to the private sector. Then you can deal with the politics there for probably less money and shittier benefits.

Spot on! A Masters degree from Calumet or Lewis requires a lot of work. Just because you do not have a degree does not mean that they are worthless. The people who have them are smart enough to get the degrees and have the city pay for them. I earned straight As at Lewis.

9/02/2014 01:25:00 AM
I would not brag about any degree from Calumet College. I would put this school in the same general category of degree mill as Lewis and IIT and St. Xavier. And, don't forget Chicago State

You were doing well until you threw in IIT into the group. IIT is a real school it has many good programs. Maybe you meant to say ITT; that one fits well with the other ones that you mentioned.

Last line of the original post was sarcasm, half-wit.

And unless you're a cop who's looking at a 2nd or 3rd career as a "consultant" for criminal defense lawyers or civil plaintiffs with lawsuits against the police, or maybe a talk show "expert" who can shoot his mouth off at the next Rodney King scene, it wasn't directed at you.

To the stroke with the Masters degree from Calumet College who works at the academy, quit posting here about how you got the job with no clout. Your self-congratulatory statements, back-patting, and supercilious multiple postings about the Academy on this bloh are making me nauseous, and you are also full of it. Get over yourself and stop making asinine statements, you make everyone at the academy look bad. Calumet College, I'm supposed to be impressed?? Smart people don't brag about their accomplishments.

You must be an instructor at the academy without a degree. The poster struck a nerve with you. You can get a degree at Lewis. I know many people who took the initiative and earned degrees at Lewis.

No, I'm not an instructor at the academy, and yes, I also have a Masters degree. And if you agree with the above poster and his disingenuous statement, you are also a moron. Some of the most educated people I have met on this job are functionally illiterate and/or don;t have a lick of common sense or street knowledge. So, again, get over yourselves!

Gerry was very proud of the fact that he was a drunk. Irish whiskey was "mothers milk". He's kinda like all other citizens of this fair city in that he never had to take responsibility for anything. He came on this job thinking he had the time to act like he was his father who worked in022 and had over 20 years on this job. Unfortunately Gerry you never realized that you are not your father and never will be. Your exploits disgraced your family including your wife and daughters. You are an embarrassment. Not only to yourself but to your children. Shame on you. Why don't you just STFU.

Any of you 760 I/F remember when fat old crazy Kevin M reported he was shot by a gang banger in Hamlin park.
We were tearing up 019 when we were told to cease all activity and report to A/3.
We were confused as we were just getting them darlings in our sights, then they told us KM admitted he shot himself in the ass while playing with his gun.
He made Callahan look like a Boy Scout.

I am here to set the record straight. A masters degree from Calumet or Lewis requires a lot of work. The degree shows that you are willing to work hard and invest in yourself. Many instructors at the academy have masters degrees. They are at the academy because they have the background and the aptitude to get the job done.

I did fortet about ITT, but I did include IIT, but only their master program for public management. They scammed a lot of exempts into their program and cranked out a lot of degrees for no effort at all. Two of our former superintendents went through that program. I no nothing about their technical programs.

Why yes, you are correct, a graduate degree from just about any accredited school takes work. But, the amount of work is the question. I taught at a few Chicago area universities ds and I know. If I held all of my students to the academic standards that I faced, I would have flunked half of them. I put Calumet College and Chicago State at the bottom of the list of "quality schools".All you have to do is show up. Try DePaul or Loyola or U of I for a change.
